  藝圃位于蘇州市文衙弄。藝圃始建于明嘉靖年間,袁祖庚建醉穎堂,題門額“城市山林”。萬歷時(shí)為文徵明曾孫文震孟所得,堂名世綸,園名藥圃。清初歸姜埰,更名頤圃,又稱敬亭山房,其子姜實(shí)節(jié)易園名為藝圃。此后屢易主。道光三、四年,吳姓曾予葺新。道光十九年,園宅歸綢業(yè)同人,名七襄公所,重加修葺。此園保持明末清初景觀風(fēng)貌和部分建筑,是研究園林史的重要實(shí)例。

  藝圃現(xiàn)占地約3800平方米。宅分五進(jìn),布局曲折,廳堂古樸。園在宅西,水池居中,約占四分之一。建筑多在池北,池南以假山為主景。有博雅堂、延光閣、旸谷書堂、思敬居、乳魚亭、思嗜軒、朝爽亭、香草居、響月廊諸勝。

  藝圃平面略呈南北狹長的矩形,北端為庭院,由主廳博雅堂和水榭組成;中央鑿池,面積約一畝,為全園中心,水面集中,東南、西南各有水灣一處,上構(gòu)低平石橋。除北端為水榭駁岸外,其余池岸均曲屈自然,而池面則因近旁為低小建筑而顯得開闊,取網(wǎng)師園手法。池南疊假山,構(gòu)橋亭,西南置小院一所。池北岸的五間水榭,低浮于碧波之上,兩側(cè)有附屬建筑。這些建筑占據(jù)池北全部立面,這在蘇州園林中甚為少見。池南臨水置石磯,其后堆土山,山近水一面以湖石砌直壁危徑。西南以墻隔作旁院,引水灣入內(nèi)為小池,石山也延脈至此。院西方廳二間,周列湖石,種植山茶、辛夷,別有洞天。池東南的乳魚亭,為明代遺構(gòu)。其旁邊的緩曲石橋,也屬建園初期作品,都很珍貴。

  藝圃的這種以池水、石徑、絕壁相結(jié)合的手法,取法自然而又力求超越自然,是明清時(shí)期蘇州一代造園家最為常用的布局技法。

  藝圃地處金、閶二門間的文衙弄。園景開朗,風(fēng)格質(zhì)樸,較多地保存了建園初期的格局。有其較高的歷史與藝術(shù)價(jià)值。全園有地僅為五畝,以約占五分之一的池水為中心。水面集中,其東南及西南兩角,各有水灣伸出,并于水口之上各架形制不同的石板橋一座,故而水面顯得開闊流動(dòng),絕無擁塞局促之感。池水之北多建筑,博雅堂為園中主要廳堂,其南端有小院,設(shè)湖石花臺,院南臨池處,建有水榭五間,兩側(cè)廂房則與池水東、西兩面的廂房相連。

  池水之南為假山,以土堆成,臨處之處,則以湖石疊成絕壁、危徑,既多變化又較自然。于池北遠(yuǎn)望此處,山石嶙剛,樹木蔥郁,給人以奇秀之美、山林之趣,成為園中的主要對景。此種以池水、石徑、絕壁相結(jié)合的手法,為明清蘇州一代造園家所常用,取法自然而又力求超越自然。池水之東有乳魚亭,系明代遺物,外有小徑與各處相通。池水之西,有芹廬小院,以圓洞門與其它景區(qū)相隔而又相連。步入院門,即可見院中有小池,似與大池相通。這在蘇州園林中還屬于孤例。院中散置湖石花木,為園內(nèi)最為避靜之處。
