China is faced with some enormous challenges as it enters the 21st century. In order to ensure the prosperity of our nation and its future generations we must confront and ultimately solve these challenges.
Some of the more pressing issues facing China are universal. These include environmental degradation, over population and the effects of globalization.
To overcome some of the things we need to implement include:
Enhancing our scientific and industrial technologies in such areas as IT, Bio- tech, AI and Cybernetics.
Further develop public infrastructure in under developed regions.
Promote education reform at all levels.
Introduce sustainable development initiatives.
The implementation of free trade agreement between China and ASEAN.
The benefit to China in introducing these initiatives will be significant and far-reaching. It is important to realize that these initiatives need to filter down through all elements of the society in China. For instance, cutting edge technologies and intellectual properties; the development of e-commerce based economy; an education system that encourages innovation and creativity; increased foreign investment; higher living standards; more efficient use of natural resources.
It is important for us to realize these reforms are both essential and necessary. These will help China to fulfill its vast and unrealized potential on the world stage. It will also contribute more to a globalized world of the new century.
As for the future our task is not to foresee but to enable.

In addition, there is always danger to ignore the real problematic issue such as political corruption, academic plagiarism, educational unfairness, and social classes polarizing which are screaming for our attention and should be our priority.

As we know, most knowledge we have comes from two sources: the books orpersonal experience in our daily life. Each one has its advantage. Maybe somepeople think that book knowledge is more important than experience knowledge.However, I am strongly against their opinion. I consider that experience is moreuseful.
Firstly, practical experience can help us find jobs successful. There aretwo kinds of people: experienced employees and college graduates, if you are amanager, which one do you prefer? There is no doubt that you will choose theexperienced employees. Because they have more practical knowledge, theyunderstand what their companies needs and how to make profit for theircompanies. Some college graduates have learned much book knowledge, but theycan’t take advantage of these theories effectively. Therefore, many companiesare not willing to employ graduates. This phenomenon tells us experience is moreimportant for us to find good jobs.
Secondly, experience can give us more impressed knowledge. It’s said thatone learn by doing, if you want to make advances, it’s necessary to practice.Moreover, we learn how to get along with others or how to have self-respect fromexperience. Thirdly, our country’s development depends on innovation, which comes fromexperimentation. I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity ofdespair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. Itseemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. Later during my studyin the university I always told myself “I can handle it” when my own goalsseemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I saidit ,I always came back to my senses.
Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school. Whenever my studentscomplain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell thesame story of Callahan to them. I just want to make them believe they can handletheir difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared tosomething better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will buildup fortitude.
So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that cangive us strength. Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handleit. We can enjoy the best of all worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.
But, do Western styles and values threaten our identity?
History makes it easy for us to think so-perhaps too easy.
Some people seem to think that adopting Western customs, such as a bride wearing white-which has long been a color of mourning in China, instead of the traditional Chinese red for her wedding, is another submission to foreign intervention,--a betrayal of our heritage, they say.
They fear that as we become "globalized", we will no longer be Chinese.
I do not agree.
History teachers that a strong and confident nation is at ease in hearing from the outside world.
The wedding of Eastern and Western cultures, whether in white gowns or red, brings us variety.
It is a rich banquet of special foods from all over the world.
As an amateur gourmet of Chinese cuisine, our superb flavours delight me.

Over the past Spring Festival, I got involved in a family dispute. Rightbefore I got home, four satellite channels of CCTV were added to the 14 channelswe had already had. In prime time at night, they all had interesting efore, the five of us-my parents, my sisters and I-had to argue over what towatch. Finally, we agreed that we should watch the "most interesting"programme... If we
could agree what that was.
However, all of us there remember that for a long time after we had TV,there were only one or two channels available. The increase in options revealsan important change in our life: the abundance of choice.

Good morning ladies and gentleman. My name is Miller. I’d like to talk to you today about the topic of Traffic Jams in Shanghai. The purpose of this talk is to analysis the problem of traffic jams and try to make some advices in my view. I shall only take about four minutes of your times. I’ve divided my presentation into three parts.
First. Status. Yesterday, I went to XuJiaHui. I start my route at 1:00pm. When I arrived home, it was 8:00pm. I only use nearly 3 hours on shopping. That means I almost waste 4 hours on the way. That is the Traffic Jams Status in Shanghai.
Second. Reasons. I found that the traffic management is the most serious problem in the traffic system. In some important crossroads, there are no enough traffic police to do the traffic grooming. It’s irrational. We paid so much taxes, but we cannot comfort what we should get. For example, on the overhead, two cars had made a traffic accident. This leaded the traffic jams. We had not see the traffic police from start to end. It took me nearly 10 minutes on the overhead. It was happened yesterday.
Third. To solve it. What I can advice is just add more traffic polices in the important crossroads. It’s the most useful way to solve the traffic jams. Because yesterday when we nearly went out the overhead, the speed was increased obviously. We found several traffic polices in the crossroad. They commanded cars and then the traffic went well.
That brings me to the end of my presentation. Let me just run over the key points again. Traffic jams was made by several resources. To solve it, we can depend on the traffic police. But for ourselves, to drive more carefully, more reasonably, maybe is another way to decrease the traffic jams.

I think the creativity roots in imagination. Albert Einstein said thatimagination is important than knowledge. Because we should creative a thing thatis never appeared, we need to image. Technology is power, which is not proportionally distributed among creature. Human beings and other species belong to distinctively varied categories since men grasp the strength of technology. The people with great power, driven by their greedy instinct, can easily build their prosperity upon others species' or other human-beings' suffering and torment. With high-technology, people hunt and kill cetaceans in extremely high efficiency for extra food. Developed countries build polluting factories in Third World countries and earn the profits thousand miles away. In the past years, we stopped killing animals for nutrition we don't need. We passed laws and regulations to protect the least-advantaged people. Because of humanism, we started to consider human beings and nature as a whole and care more than just ourselves. We filled ourselves with reason, love and compassion. Humanism keeps reminding us the consequence of abusing the immense power of technology and the great responsibility we undertake.
As human, we are deeply conscious of our common humanity. There is no way we can walk away without being tortured by our conscience after we did so many damages on nature or other forms of life. Therefore, we modify our behavior to what we think it's humane. In this way, we gradually achieve the ultimate harmony between human and nature.
In fact, humanism has done much more than just making our conscience clear. It actually saves us from destroying our planet. We all know that we can't upset the balance of nature without a price although sometimes people choose to neglect the consequences and give in to the desire of fortune. Silent Spring, a very famous book written by Rachel Carson, revealed the fact that DDT and such chemical products could be very lethal to creatures like birds, and therefore they caused irreversible damage to our eco-system. The manufacturers knew exactly about the side effects but they chose to conceal the fact for their own interests. Without the humanists like Rachel Carson, we will remain ignorant and eventualy face our own doom desperately.
The role of humanism is absolutely indispensable. It gives us a unique opportunity to be wise and act in ways that elevate us above the animal kingdom. It retains our humanness. It prevents the world from being destroyed because of our destructive instinct. So ladies and gentlemen, let passion fill your sails, but let humanism be your rudder.

Have you ever bought any food on the train? And do you ask for the receiptafter buying it? Nowadays, all trains in China provide its passengers withreceipts for commodities, but 7 years ago, things were quite different.
On 13th of October, 20__, the train T109 from Beijing to Shanghai wasspeeding on the railway. A graduate student bought a sausage at 1 yuan on thetrain, then asked for a receipt.
“Are you kidding? It’s just one yuan!” The crew member was surprised.
The student, however, answered in a determined voice, “I paid the money, soI deserve the receipt.”
“But we never give receipts on the train.’ As a result, his further requestwas turned down by a cold shoulder.
Several days later, the student sued the National Railway Ministry, for notproviding receipts for passengers.
To his dismay, the court turned down the case for lack of evidence. But he,who majored in law at that time, believed law as a most powerful weapon, so hedid not give up. Instead, he began his journey of collecting first-hand evidenceby taking trains and buying commodities aboard. When his classmates were playingsoccer, he was taking the train; When his classmates were buying food atMcdonald’s, he was buying food on the train; When his classmates were askinggirls out, he was asking for the receipts. As he joked, ‘I was either taking thetrain or on the way to take the train.’
One month later, he appeared in the court again, with newly-collectedevidence and a stronger confidence. And I guess, ladies and gentlemen, you willall cheer for the result because this time, the student won the case. Very soon,a regulation about receipts on the train came out. And whatever we buy on thetrain now, there’s a receipt for us.
Outside the court, the student was asked, “How do you make it to the end?”He said, “As a law student, I root my faith in law. I believe that law is there,to protect every person with no exception, and to ensure every person has asay.”
His words spread a strong faith in law, which is not only a doctrine of alaw student, but also a belief that all citizens ought to hold. It is this faiththat initiates the student to resort to law for a tiny issue; it is this faiththat supports him to endure all the exhausting trips when collecting evidence;It is this faith that makes a seemingly “ridiculous” receipt request legal andrightful. It is this faith that helps to change our life, enhance our judicialsystem and bring social justice.
To many, a receipt of 1 yuan is too small to mention, however rights are tobe respected and law is to be believed in. It all starts with a tiny receipt of1 yuan, but we get a monumental case, a new regulation and a bumper harvest insocial justice. The lack of time is just the excuse for my negligence of every single minute. I believe that the great dividing line between success and failure can be expressed in six words,"I did not have enough time."The fact is I do have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein. The point is I have never touched upon the real meaning of life which lies in snatching, seizing and enjoying every minute of it. No idleness, no delay, no procrastination, no complaint! It is during my moments of complaining or hesitation that my destiny is shaped. Once I make full use of every moment, I believe that, my worries will be gradually cut down to nothing.
Time is the most valuable of all our possessions, but the most perishable as well. As Henry David Thoreau said,"You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment."

I have a dream today.

However, we meed dreams. They nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. They keep us going. Most successful people are dreamers as well as ordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare to be great. When we were little kids, we all dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant. Now what we need to do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. However, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams into actions. Well, just start with concrete objectives and stick to it. Don’t let the nameless fear confuse the eye and confound our strong belief of future. Through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through our creativity, we will make it.
Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. So my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. Whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today.
