I know what you're thinking. You think I've lost my way, and somebody's going to come on the stage in aminute and guide me gently back to my seat. (Applause) I get that all the timein Dubai. "Here on holiday are you, dear?" (Laughter) "Come tovisit the children? How long are you staying?"
Well actually, I hope for a while longer yet. I have been living and teaching in theGulf for over 30 years. (Applause) And in that time, I have seen a lot ofchanges. Now that statistic is quite shocking. And I want to talk to you todayabout language loss and the globalization of English. I want to tell you aboutmy friend who was teaching English to adults in Abu Dhabi. And one fine day,she decided to take them into the garden to teach them some nature vocabulary. But it was she who ended up learning all the Arabic words for the local plants,as well as their uses -- medicinal uses, cosmetics, cooking, herbal. How didthose students get all that knowledge? Of course, from their grandparents andeven their great-grandparents. It's not necessary to tell you how important itis to be able to communicate across generations.
But sadly, today, languages are dying at an unprecedented rate. Alanguage dies every 14 days. Now, at the same time, English is the undisputedglobal language. Could there be a connection? Well I don't know. But I do knowthat I've seen a lot of changes. When I first came out to the Gulf, I came toKuwait in the days when it was still a hardship post. Actually, not that longago. That is a little bit too early. But nevertheless, I was recruited by theBritish Council along with about 25 other teachers. And we were the firstnon-Muslims to teach in the state schools there in Kuwait. We were brought toteach English because the government wanted to modernize the country andempower the citizens through education. And of course, the U.K. benefited fromsome of that lovely oil wealth.
Okay. Now this is the major change that I've seen -- how teachingEnglish has morphed from being a mutually beneficial practice to becoming amassive international business that it is today. No longer just a foreignlanguage on the school curriculum. And no longer the sole domain of motherEngland. It has become a bandwagon for every English-speaking nation on earth. And why not? After all, the best education -- according to the latest WorldUniversity Rankings -- is to be found in the universities of the U.K. and theU.S. So everybody wants to have an English education, naturally. But if you'renot a native speaker, you have to pass a test.
Now can it be right to reject a student on linguistic ability alone?Perhaps you have a computer scientist who's a genius. Would he need the samelanguage as a lawyer, for example? Well, I don't think so. We English teachersreject them all the time. We put a stop sign, and we stop them in their tracks. They can't pursue their dream any longer, till they get English. Now let me putit this way, if I met a monolingual Dutch speaker who had the cure for cancer, would I stop him from entering my British University? I don't think so. Butindeed, that is exactly what we do. We English teachers are the gatekeepers. And you have to satisfy us first that your English is good enough. Now it canbe dangerous to give too much power to a narrow segment of society. Maybe thebarrier would be too universal.
Okay. "But," I hear you say, "what about theresearch? It's all in English." So the books are in English, the journalsare done in English, but that is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It feeds theEnglish requirement. And so it goes on. I ask you, what happened totranslation? If you think about the Islamic Golden Age, there was lots oftranslation then. They translated from Latin and Greek into Arabic, intoPersian, and then it was translated on into the Germanic languages of Europeand the Romance languages. And so light shone upon the Dark Ages of Europe. Nowdon't get me wrong; I am not against teaching English, all you English teachersout there. I love it that we have a global language. We need one today morethan ever. But I am against using it as a barrier. Do we really want to end upwith 600 languages and the main one being English, or Chinese? We need morethan that. Where do we draw the line? This system equates intelligence with aknowledge of English which is quite arbitrary.
And I want to remind you that thegiants upon whose shoulders today's intelligentsia stand did not have to haveEnglish, they didn't have to pass an English test. Case in point, Einstein. He,by the way, was considered remedial at school because he was, in fact, dyslexic. But fortunately for the world, he did not have to pass an Englishtest. Because they didn't start until 1964 with TOEFL, the American test ofEnglish. Now it's exploded. There are lots and lots of tests of English. Andmillions and millions of students take these tests every year. Now you mightthink, you and me, those fees aren't bad, they're okay, but they areprohibitive to so many millions of poor people. So immediately, we're rejectingthem.
It brings to mind a headline I saw recently: "Education: TheGreat Divide." Now I get it, I understand why people would focus onEnglish. They want to give their children the best chance in life. And to dothat, they need a Western education. Because, of course, the best jobs go topeople out of the Western Universities, that I put on earlier. It's a circularthing.
Okay. Let me tell you a story about two scientists, two Englishscientists. They were doing an experiment to do with genetics and the forelimbsand the hind limbs of animals. But they couldn't get the results they wanted. They really didn't know what to do, until along came a German scientist whorealized that they were using two words for forelimb and hind limb, whereasgenetics does not differentiate and neither does German. So bingo, problemsolved. If you can't think a thought, you are stuck. But if another languagecan think that thought, then, by cooperating, we can achieve and learn so muchmore.
My daughter, came to England from Kuwait. She had studied scienceand mathematics in Arabic. It's an Arabic medium school. She had to translate itinto English at her grammar school. And she was the best in the class at thosesubjects. Which tells us that, when students come to us from abroad, we may notbe giving them enough credit for what they know, and they know it in their ownlanguage. When a language dies, we don't know what we lose with that language.
This is -- I don't know if you saw it on CNN recently -- they gavethe Heroes Award to a young Kenyan shepherd boy who couldn't study at night inhis village like all the village children, because the kerosene lamp, it hadsmoke and it damaged his eyes. And anyway, there was never enough kerosene, because what does a dollar a day buy for you? So he invented a cost-free solarlamp. And now the children in his village get the same grades at school as thechildren who have electricity at home. (Applause) When he received his award,he said these lovely words: "The children can lead Africa from what it istoday, a dark continent, to a light continent." A simple idea, but itcould have such far-reaching consequences.
當(dāng)他接受獎勵時,說了下面這句話:"這些孩子可以帶領(lǐng)非洲這塊黑暗大陸迎向光明"一個簡單的想法,卻有著深遠(yuǎn)的影響! eople who have nolight, whether it's physical or metaphorical, cannot pass our exams, and we cannever know what they know. Let us not keep them and ourselves in the dark. Letus celebrate diversity. Mind your language. Use it to spread great ideas.
Thank you very much.

We often hear people say, “Never give up.” These can be encouraging words and words of determination. A personwho believes in them will keep trying to reach his goal no matter how manytimes he fails. In my opinion, the quality of determination to succeed is animportant one to have. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.
One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will rarely achieveanything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at somethingnew, so we should not feel discouraged and should try again. Besides, if wealways give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and growas people. Another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from ourmistakes only if we make a new effort. If we do not try again, the lesson wehave learned is wasted. Finally, we should never give up because as we work toreach our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence can help us succeedin other areas of our lives. If we never challenge ourselves, we will begin todoubt our abilities.
In short, it is important that wedo not give up when working for our goals. Whether we succeed in the end ornot, we will learn something, and what we learn will help us to become better, more confident people.
Furthermore, if we give up, we have non chance ofattaining our goals, but if we keep trying, there is always a chance that wewill succeed one day. Thank you !

Dear teacher, dear students, you are good!
Today, with a bit of excitement, a bit of pleasure, I stand here, with all of you together to talk about the topic of innovation.
As is known to all, regardless of the time difference of innovation is to achieve one of the prerequisites for success, no innovation the soul is sad, when we sat in the bright classroom enjoying the high-tech to bring convenience ever thought about the birth of these things after the process of how hard? And by a how brave and innovative spirit to invented?
Believe that a lot of people in a small time or that is now, there is a want to be a scientist's heart. But for many years we have not been able to have a sense of innovation and ideas, will simply accept. In the face of new things, never ask ask what, blindly accept will only make yourself drowning in numerous living beings.
As students, we not only need you to have the spirit of innovation, we need innovation is reflected in all aspects of life and learning. For example you innovation have a belong to your own effective learning methods, can let you learn than before more relaxed, more on a floor, it is innovation; when a teacher asks a question, answer to your answers with others out of the ordinary, but also very reasonable, and this is the innovative. From now on, there is the cultivation of the consciousness of your innovative spirit, regardless of the future you will be doing what profession, along what path, such a spirit of innovation will let you boundlessly.
At the same time I also called, as a teacher, should break the normal procedure, the inherent innovation old teaching mode. Innovation of more effective teaching methods for the class of students, so that students learn the joy of knowledge. Let us give ourselves the wings of innovation, in life on the road, farther and farther, the farther the better.

there are many people who think that wealth is better than health. i used to think so until one day i read a story about howard hughes. he was an american billionaire who got anything he wanted. however, in the last twenty years of his life, his health began to deteriorate and he was miserable. he had the best doctors and nurses. however, he could still find no relief. i realized that health is worth all the money in the world. if you have millions of dollars but your health is poor, you will not be able to do what you want to do. so i would like to say don’t hurt yourself trying to make money. instead take care of your body and be happy with what you do have. health is more important.
which is more important, health or wealth? it is a hot topic among people. i can hardly answer this question. i didn’t realize that health is more imporant until i saw a businessman’s real life.
a successful businessman, one of my father’s friends, devoted himseff to his business. he works from morning to night every day. there is no weekends in his mind. he often says, "i must earn much money so that i can get what i want. "lately, he is ill. though he has a lot of money, he can do nothing but lie in the hospital’s bed.
so i think health is more important than wealth people can do nothing if they are always in poor health, let alone happiness. no matter we are rich or not, we can not ignore the importance of health.

My Understanding of Innovation Good afternoon everybody. I’m Alison from GAMI. It’s my honour to stand here to share my understanding of innovation. About innovation, what comes to your mind firstly ? As for me, most innovation shines our lives in the long process of humanhistory. Just imagine ten million years ago, what are our ancestors’ lifestyles? They must hunt animals or pick the roots and leaves for food laboriously with simple tools ; They have to roar with each other to communicate in a long distance; Their transportation basically rely on walking. In short, their lives are hard, simple, even a little boring. However, taking a look at our lives today! We can order KFC at home , our food is more easily and diversifiedly to be acquired; we can get in touch with our friends anywhere at anytime by telephone , E-mail andWeChat! Our vehicles include buses ,cars, planes and so on, it becames so easy to reach the destination. So how did these happen? Those changes are all owing to the countless innovation. It makes our lives become more convenient, comfortable and colorful. But in today’s modern life , don’t we need to innovate? No no, let’s have a look at the problems we are facing: air pollution, traffic jam, waste of resources. Those are related to our survival. Maybe we can make a huge machine to filter the polluted , or invent a car which not only can drive along the road, but also can fly in the sky; or one day we synthesis super energy materials, we would never relay on traditional resources any more. Are those ideas too exaggerated? Who knows? Just as hundreds years ago, nobody can imagine we can fly by plane. Time will tell you the truth .As Edward, a famous psychologists, said: Without innovation, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns. Therefore, innovation is an eternal topic for people, countries and societies! That’s all, thank u !
