　　but one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the negro is still not free. one hundred years later, the life of the negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. one hundred years later, the negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. one hundred years later, the negro is still languishing in the corners of american society and finds himself an exile in his own land. so we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.

　　in a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. when the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution and the declaration of independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every american was to fall heir. this note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

　　it is obvious today that america has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. instead of honoring this sacred obligation, america has given the negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." but we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. we refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.

　　so we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

　　we have also come to this hallowed spot to remind america of the fierce urgency of now. this is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of god's children. now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.

　　it would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the negro. this sweltering summer of the negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning.

　　those who hope that the negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. there will be neither rest nor tranquility in america until the negro is granted his citizenship rights. the whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

　　but there is something that i must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. in the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

　　we must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.

　　the marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.

　　we cannot walk alone.and as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. we cannot turn back. there are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "when will you be satisfied?" we can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. we cannot be satisfied as long as the negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. we can never be satisfied as long as a negro in mississippi cannot vote and a negro in new york believes he has nothing for which to vote. no, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

　　I am grateful for the opportunity to deliver my speech here after 7-days’ preparation with my friend Jinly. Thanks to Jinly’s strong support in our work. I think it is my way of saying thank you to you that giving an excellent presentation to all my friends here.

　　The subject of our presentation is “YOUR DREAM & YOUR GOAL”. During the next 10 minutes, we’ll give you a brief explanation of these stuff at the best of our knowledge.

　　First of all, I’d like to spent 3 or 5 minutes on discussing about the dream. When we were 5, they asked us what we want to be when we grow up. We answered like superman, princess, or in my case, a sailor moon. When we were 10, again they asked and the answer was policemen, doctors and some other high-principled jobs. But unfortunately, we finally found our dreams unrealistic as we entered a not-so-good high school, did not-so-good school works and went to a not-so-good direction in our life. I guess, many of you have thought about changing your dreams, but finally felt at a loss again. Yep! We’re adults and they are waiting for a serious answer. Well, how about this? WHO THE HELL KNOWS! Dream is only a dream. It’s unnecessary for us to think over our dreams all day long. You know, dreams always change, and this is not the time to make difficult decisions. But what do dreams do? Why do we still have an urgent need of dreams?

　　Think about it: do you have had a time when you were full of happiness just because you have made an achievement that pushes you a bit to your dream? Do you have had a time when you insist on what you were doing even the tears keep falling from your eyes? That is the power from dreams! May I equate the faith and the dream here? As we all know, aims and dreams are far from each other to some extent but close to each other on the other hand. Just like the parabola and the number line in mathematics. But it is the dream that help us to map out our aim and work out plans one after another in our life. Just like what Howard Schultz, the founder of the Starbuck said, Dreams are like the stars----we never reach them, but like mariners, we chart our course by them. And I believe that if you have a dream and make efforts step by step, some of you may extremely finish the quantitative change on the way to success and reach the qualitative change!

　　I would like to finish my part by a tongue twister: Whether the weather be fine or whether the weather be not. Whether the weather be cold or whether the weather be hot. We'll weather the weather whether we like it or not. Whatever you dreams are and however difficult it is to realize them. Reach your aim step by step and I believe your dreams will extremely come into truth!

When I was a primary school student I wrote in my composition that I want to be a scientist when I grow up. At that age I didn't know what is a scientist, nor did I know what is dream. We care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. Last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.

　　As college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country. I believe in all my fellow classmates. 　　The topic for my speech today is “Festival.” I would like to talk about myfavorite festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival.

　　In Xiamen, when we celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival, we do not only followthe common practices such as having a big dinner party with our family, eatingmooncakes, and appreciating the full moon at night, we also have one uniquecustom which is only practiced in Xiamen, that is “Bo Bing”.

　　“Bo Bing” is a very interesting game that almost all Xiamen people playduring this festival. Usually family members or close friends get togetheraround a table with a big round bowl in the middle and six dices in the bowl. Wetake turns to throw the dices into the bowl. We will get different prizesaccroding to the different ways the dices show their upper sides. Everyone islikely to become the champion or “Zhuangyuan” for the year. There is an elementof luck and equal opportunity in this game. So people usually get excited whileplaying. Also, the game gives very pleasant sounds. The tinkling made by thedices falling into the bowl is pleasant, people’s laughing, cheering andapplauding for the big prizes they’ve won is pleasant. All this adds greatly tothe joyful atmosphere of this festival. As a kid, of course I also like thematerial prizes I get from the game, such as a candy or a cake.

　　In this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, my family invited our foreign friendsto come to our home to celebrate the Festival together. They have two childrenwho are younger than me. While our parents were making Jiaozi together, we kidsplayed “Bo Bing”. We bought quite some gifts to share with our guests as theirprizes.They enjoyed the game and our get-together very much.

　　The literal translation of “Bo Bing” is “mooncake gambling.” But actuallyit is not gambling, at least our family never plays it that way. For us, it ismore an occasion of happy sharing and getting-together. This is why Xiamen’sMid-Autumn Festival has become my favorite festival in the year.

Then we visited the Five Kiosks Bridge, there were five kiosks on the bridge, and every kiosk has a long history. We sit in the kiosk and took some photos. Last we went to the Fishing Platform. Why do people call it ‘Fishing Platform’? Because the emperor called ‘Qian Long’ in Qing Dynasty visited it. We also fished in it. We had a good time in Yang Zhou.

She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled their babies.

　　Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs. Diana Fossey, who spent most of her lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.

　　To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.

　　Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur - natural scenes aren't natural anymore. Deforestation to heat lodges are devastating Nepal. Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica. Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks.

　　All these appalling facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been eroding our resources. Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 20xx the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.

　　Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations are receiving donations - big notes, small notes or even coins - from housewives, plumbers, ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and invalids. Some of them cannot afford to send the money but they do. These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. Why? Because they care. Because they still want their Mother Nature back. Because they know it still belongs to them.

　　This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it , it's all coming from a scene to be remembered, a scene to recall and to cherish.

　　The other night, as I saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to something else, someplace else, a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seemed to have been except the deer.

　　And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's time for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.

　　Once again, I have come to think of Mrs. Diana Fossey because it is with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world.

　　And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our minds, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

I don't have that kind of confidence, and, anyway, coveting your neighbor's ox or donkey is not the problem it used to be, so I thought I would use my few minutes today to make Ten Suggestions, or maybe just Ten Observations, about the world and your lives after Princeton. Please note, these points have nothing whatsoever to do with interest rates. My qualification for making such suggestions, or observations, besides having kindly been invited to speak today by President Tilghman, is the same as the reason that your obnoxious brother or sister got to go to bed later--I am older than you. Life is amazingly unpredictable; any 22-year-old who thinks he or she knows where they will be in 10 years, much less in 30, is simply lacking imagination. Look what happened to me: A dozen years ago I was minding my own business teaching Economics 101 in Alexander Hall and trying to think of good excuses for avoiding faculty meetings. Then I got a phone call... In case you are skeptical of Forrest Gump's insight, here's a concrete suggestion for each of the graduating seniors. Take a few minutes the first chance you get and talk to an alum participating in his or her 25th, or 30th, or 40th reunion--you know, somebody who was near the front of the P-rade. Ask them, back when they were graduating 25, 30, or 40 years ago, where they expected to be today. If you can get them to open up, they will tell you that today they are happy and satisfied in various measures, or not, and their personal stories will be filled with highs and lows and in-betweens. But, I am willing to bet, those life stories will in almost all cases be quite different, in large and small ways, from what they expected when they started out. This is a good thing, not a bad thing; who wants to know the end of a story that's only in its early chapters? Your family and friends and your time at Princeton have given you a good start. What will you do with it? Will you keep learning and thinking hard and critically about the most important questions? Will you become an emotionally stronger person, more generous, more loving, more ethical? Will you involve yourself actively and constructively in the world? Many things will happen in your lives, pleasant and not so pleasant, but, paraphrasing a Woodrow Wilson School adage from the time I was here, "Wherever you go, there you are." 　　3. The concept of success leads me to consider so-called meritocracies and their implications. We have been taught that meritocratic institutions and societies are fair. Putting aside the reality that no system, including our own, is really entirely meritocratic, meritocracies may be fairer and more efficient than some alternatives. But fair in an absolute sense? Think about it. A meritocracy is a system in which the people who are the luckiest in their health and genetic endowment; luckiest in terms of family support, encouragement, and, probably, income; luckiest in their educational and career opportunities; and luckiest in so many other ways difficult to enumerate--these are the folks who reap the largest rewards. The only way for even a putative meritocracy to hope to pass ethical muster, to be considered fair, is if those who are the luckiest in all of those respects also have the greatest responsibility to work hard, to contribute to the betterment of the world, and to share their luck with others. As the Gospel of Luke says (and I am sure my rabbi will forgive me for quoting the New Testament in a good cause): "From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded" (Luke 12:48, New Revised Standard Version Bible). 　　4. Who is worthy of admiration? The admonition from Luke--which is shared by most ethical and philosophical traditions, by the way--helps with this question as well. Those most worthy of admiration are those who have made the best use of their advantages or, alternatively, coped most courageously with their adversities. I think most of us would agree that people who have, say, little formal schooling but labor honestly and diligently to help feed, clothe, and educate their families are deserving of greater respect--and help, if necessary--than many people who are superficially more successful. They're more fun to have a beer with, too. Ultimately, though, cynicism is a poor substitute for critical thought and constructive action. Sure, interests and money and ideology all matter, as you learned in political science. But my experience is that most of our politicians and policymakers are trying to do the right thing, according to their own views and consciences, most of the time. If you think that the bad or indifferent results that too often come out of Washington are due to base motives and bad intentions, you are giving politicians and policymakers way too much credit for being effective. Honest error in the face of complex and possibly intractable problems is a far more important source of bad results than are bad motives. For these reasons, the greatest forces in Washington are ideas, and people prepared to act on those ideas. Public service isn't easy. 　　I would like to share with you a true story about Nicholas James Vujicic.He was born with Tetra-amelia, a rare disorder characterized by the absence ofall four limbs. He struggled as a child, eventually came to terms with hisdisability and started his own non-profit organization Life Without Limbs – atage seventeen. He is widely known as a motivational speaker, giving talksworldwide on life with a disability, hope, and finding meaning in life.

　　He was bullied at school, Vujicic grew depressed and by the age of 8,contemplated suicide. At age 10, he tried to drown himself in 4 inches of water,but did not go through with it out of love for his parents. After praying togrow arms and legs, Vujicic eventually realized that his accomplishments couldinspire others – and became grateful for his life. A key turning point came whenhis mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severedisability. Vujicic realized he wasn't unique in his struggles and began toembrace and transcend his disability.

　　This man, the soldier of life, came to my hometown 2 months ago. I got tolisten to him, and talk to him, face to face. I could never forget the look inhis face when he said “when I was young, I always feel cold, and dark. My firstdream was to grow arms and legs, but there is no future for me at all. ” Andnow, 28 years has passed since he was born, 28 years without arms and legs.Nick’s first dream didn't come true, but he didn't lose his faith of himself,and the faith of this life.

　　Nick is living a life without limbs, and also a life without limits.Compare to him, young people, there is no excuses to lose our faith in ourselvesand this world. I understand that life couldn't be anything we want it to be,and life couldn't bring us everything we long for, sometimes, life even takesaway our cherished ones. However, we are young; we are the hope of the wholeworld. Faith is right there within our reach.
