With the development of the society, people pay more concern on whetherchoose a high-paying job with long hours or a low-paying job with short hours. There are different opinions on it, and the topic become more and moreconspicuous.

Every coin has two sides. The two choices have their own advantages anddisadvantages, but I support that a high-paying job with long hours is better. One of the reasons is that I am a workaholic, a high-paying job with long hourscan afford more opportunities to make great progress to challenge myself, andthe success will satisfy my sense of achievement to a great extent. And what Iwant to emphasize is that this is an economic society which requires me to seethe reality clearly. A high-paying job means a high position in the society, soI can get more respect and admiration from others. I should also take on theresponsibility of providing a better life for my family, such as a big house, aprivate car, plenty of food, beautiful clothes, the best education and medicaltreatments and so on. What’s more, in the long run, with a high paying-job, I’llsave up much money for the life in the future, in other words, even though Iretire in old age, I can still give my family an easy life. Last but not least,we are young now, if we don’t work hard, what do we live for when we get old inthe future?

In short, when we are young and strong, working hard is the best choice.Cheer up! Come on!

  總之,在我們年輕力壯的時(shí)候,努力工作是的選擇。打起精神,加油!

Everyone knows that diligence is the key to success. As a proverb goes: “Diligence is the mother of success.” Diligence means working hard andpersistently.

All famous people of great achievements are examples of diligence. They allowe their success to hard work. Without constant efforts, no one can expect tosucceed in doing anything great. Thomas Edison kept on working hard for a longtime before he was able to invent he electric light. Madame Curie worked hard inthe poor conditions for many years before she finally discovered radium. Somepeople may attribute success to good luck. But good luck favors those who arewell prepared and diligent people who can make use of it. So idleness can onlylead to poverty. If you do not devote yourself to your study and work, you canhardly make a living, let alone make some accomplishments.

As high school students, we must be aware that the only way to success ishard work. We must concentrate our attention on our studies, and make full useof our precious time, in order to meet the fierce challenges in the futurecompetitions. It is certain that our future success will only rest on ourconstant efforts. As a proverb goes: “Only by working hard can we reap a bumperharvest.”

The City Mouse and the Country Mouse

Once there were two mice. They were friends. One mouse lived in the country; the other mouse lived in the city. After many years the Country mouse saw the City mouse; he said, "Do come and see me at my house in the country." So the City mouse went. The City mouse said, "This food is not good, and your house is not good. Why do you live in a hole in the field? You should come and live in the city. You would live in a nice house made of stone. You would have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city."

The Country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. It was a very good house. Nice food was set ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eat they heard a great noise. The City mouse cried, " Run! Run! The cat is coming!" They ran away quickly and hid.

After some time they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said, "I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid."

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, honorable judges. Today I feel highly honored to stand here and deliver this speech to you. My topic is “Global citizenship begins at home”.

Global citizenship, from my point of view, is a kind of responsibility, a way of behaving, under the tide of globalization.

Since China has been a member of WTO for 6 years, great changes have taken place around us. It’s no wonder that global citizenship deeply affected contemporary Chinese people. As far as the globalization is concerned, we’ll easily find that all the citizens around the world are in the same huge family-----the earth. We care about each other, we learn from each other, we work and have fun together. Just like the slogan of the 29th Olympic Games being held in Beijing says:” One world, one dream.”

Nowadays, we can keep ourselves informed just stay at home because of a variety of media. More and more corporations join together to develop advanced products. We begin to notice the significance of cooperation and gradually realized that we are global citizens whether we are young or old, male or female, rich or poor.

However, at the same time, in order to globalize, we expense so much that we are losing something traditional. Therefore, I believe it’s of great urgency to think globally and act locally.

It goes without saying that we have to confronted with more problems as a consequence of globalization. We should spare no effort to deal with questions of common concern, such as global warming, pollutions, disasters and terrorist activities for we not only belong to our own nation, but the whole world as well.

As a university student, especially us students from college of foreign language, it’s no longer enough for us to pay close attention to our motherland. We are in the competition within a range of the whole world.

Action speaks louder than eloquence. Everyone can be global citizen if he wants to be. If you use paper bags instead of plastic ones, if you remember to turn off the lights when leaving the room, if you read international news everyday, then you’ve already been a global citizen.

To sum up, Global Citizenship Begins at Home. Only if every one of us takes ourselves for global citizen, can our world be more harmonious. That’s all for my speech. Thank you!

classifying rubbish , improving environment good morning, respectable judges, teachers. today, standing here makes me feel really honored and excited. the title of my speech is classifying rubbish , improving environment.

personally, rubbish has been a big headache in beijing. as the year -- is coming ,every citizen has realized green beijing and green olympics will bring the far-reaching impact on beijing and even all china . the scense of rubbish nearly everywhere has given all of us a really bad impression, and i'm sure none of us wish to show off the bad side of beijing to athletes and journalists all over the world, for it would blemish the city's and even china's image and leave a bad reputation. so we really have to work hard on green olympics.

now, we are middle school students. we must improve the sense of protecting the environment and make a contribution to green olympics .

in our life, a lot of rubbish , such as waste paper, plastic bottles ,batteries and so on , is produced every day . after we learnt the passage make our environment more beautiful , we found a lot of rubbish thrown into dustbins could be recycled in fact during our discussion. so we thought it would be better if we could classify rubbish . we told our idea to our teacher and he supported us very much . we became volunteers to classify rubbish . firstly we got three big boxes and put them in a corner of our classroom . one is for waste paper , one for plastics and coke cans and the other is for batteries . with teacher's help ,soon all the students took part in the activity of classifying rubbish .in a month , we collected three boxes of paper , a box of batteries and a box of plastics and coke cans .we sold them for 28 yuan and bought some young trees with the money . we planted the trees around our school . we were all spoken highly of by our school principals. now we keep on the job and are all proud of improving environment .

the world trusts beijing .beijing still has a lot to do to reach the level the world expects, but we have the confidence to make beijing a green city. great changes are taking place, and not far in the future, beijing will be the focus of all worlds' attention. we'll grasp the opportunity and do our best to make the sky bluer, water greener and air fresher by the year .

let's all wish the best for the -- olympics in beijing. thanks for your listening.

I am honored and humbled to stand here, where so many of Americas leaders have come before me, and so many will follow.

We have a place, all of us, in a long story -- a story we continue, but whose end we will not see.It is the story of a new world that became a friend and liberator of the old, a story of a slave-holding society that became a servant of freedom, the story of a power that went into the world to protect but not possess, to defend but not to conquer.

It is the American story -- a story of flawed and fallible people, united across the generations by grand and enduring ideals.

The grandest of these ideals is an unfolding American promise that everyone belongs, that everyone deserves a chance, that no insignificant person was ever born.

Americans are called to enact this promise in our lives and in our laws. And though our nation has sometimes halted, and sometimes delayed, we must follow no other course.

Through much of the last century, Americas faith in freedom and democracy was a rock in a raging sea.Now it is a seed upon the wind, taking root in many nations.

Our democratic faith is more than the creed of our country, it is the inborn hope of our humanity, an ideal we carry but do not own, a trust we bear and pass along. And even after nearly 225 years, we have a long way yet to travel.

While many of our citizens prosper, others doubt the promise, even the justice, of our own country. The ambitions of some Americans are limited by failing schools and hidden prejudice and the circumstances of their birth. And sometimes our differences run so deep, it seems we share a continent, but not a country.

We do not accept this, and we will not allow it.Our unity, our union, is the serious work of leaders and citizens in every generation. And this is my solemn

Everybody is good, the title of my speech today is "my dream"

Everyone have a dream, and is very good, I am no exception. I have a little dream, when I succeed at the goal, to accomplish more dreams. Beginning, I was a baby, a thought become very strong, like the children in the shaolin temple, martial arts high strength. But I think to leave my parents to far away places to practice martial arts, hard work, a little loathe to give up. During my childhood, I have a dream, I hope I have the money. Adults asked: "little girl, with money you are going to do?" "I'm going to buy bubble gum" "if you have a lot of money?" "I'm going to buy a lot of bubble gum" "if you have money to burn?" "I'll do buy bubblegum factory." Innocent childhood we, indeed, have a kind heart, happiness and happiness is a the same piece of music.

Slowly into the primary school, courses more and more deep, knowledge more and more... Will feel the pressure. Now I have a dream. I hope I don't have a lot of homework to do every day. Play a little deprived, and 40% of the day we imprisoned in the classroom, a lot of time in learning. But in the face of learning, is a kind of fuzzy knowledge. As the saying goes, "a rare confused," the understanding of things, from feudalism to capitalism, the greater the more feel that their views are right. After a busy day and night lessons every day home from school, he was sleepy and tired, no taste to eat food taken late at night. This life is very monotonous, maybe sometimes miss many of my primary school classmates, sometimes with a class or a pair of hazy sleep. Hate rigid school clothes, I never wear it everywhere. On Saturday, Sunday's time is very short, children really want to temper, slowly understand life's too hard, hard and dream ok, I will try to see everyone in to life and got up early to catch late, grasp myself no longer loose. I also want to strive for their dreams.

  My speech finished, thank you!

We've all been taught that we should help people. It is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. It may even win us favors in return. However, we must be realistic. We can't say yes to every request. If we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure. Sometimes we simply don't have the time to help. In this case, we must know how to say no politely.

When we need to say no, here is one method we can try. First, we should tell the truth. If we really can't do something, we should just say so. Second, we should remember to refuse requests politely. We must communicate clearly, but must also be sincere and sympathetic. A true friend will understand. Finally, we must not feel guilty about saying no. Sometimes refusing others is the right thing to do. It can save ourselves, and them, a lot of trouble. In short, we cannot please everyone all the time. Refusing favors is a part of life.

  Youth

Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life .Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. This often existsin a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul .Worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .

Whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being ‘s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living . In the center of your heart and my heart there’s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .

When the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80.

  Thank you!

When you are a kid, you get asked this one particular question a lot, it really gets kind of annoying. What do you want to be when you grow up? Now, adults are hoping for answers like, I want to be an astronaut or I want to be a neurosurgeon, you’re adults in your imaginations.

Kids, they’re most likely to answer with pro-skateboarder, surfer or minecraft player. I asked my little brother, and he said, seriously dude, I’m 10, I have no idea, probably a pro-skier, let’s go get some ice cream.

See, us kids are going to answer something we’re stoked on, what we think is cool, what we have experience with, and that’s typically the opposite of what adults want to hear.

But if you ask a little kid, sometimes you’ll get the best answer, something so simple, so obvious and really profound. When I grow up, I want to be happy.

For me, when I grow up, I want to continue to be happy like I am now. I’m stoked to be here at TedEx, I mean, I’ve been watching Ted videos for as long as I can remember, but I never thought I’d make it on the stage here so soon. I mean, I just became a teenager, and like most teenage boys, I spend most of my time wondering, how did my room get so messy all on its own.

Did I take a shower today? And the most perplexing of all, how do I get girls to like me? Neurosciences say that the teenage brain is pretty weird, our prefrontal cortex is underdeveloped, but we actually have more neurons than adults, which is why we can be so creative, and impulsive and moody and get bummed out.

But what bums me out is to know that, a lot of kids today are just wishing to be happy, to be healthy, to be safe, not bullied, and be loved for who they are. So it seems to me when adults say, what do you want to be when you grow up? They just assume that you’ll automatically be happy and healthy.

Well, maybe that’s not the case, go to school, go to college, get a job, get married, boom, then you’ll be happy, right? You don’t seem to make learning how to be happy and healthy a priority in our schools, it’s separate from schools. And for some kids, it doesn’t exists at all? But what if we didn’t make it separate? What if we based education on the study and practice of being happy and healthy, because that’s what it is, a practice, and a simple practice at that?

Education is important, but why is being happy and healthy not considered education, I just don’t get it. So I’ve been studying the science of being happy and healthy. It really comes down to practicing these eight things. Exercise, diet and nutrition, time in nature, contribution, service to others, relationships, recreation, relaxation and stress management, and religious or spiritual involvement, yes, got that one.

So these eight things come from Dr. Roger Walsh, he calls them Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes or TLCs for short. He is a scientist that studies how to be happy and healthy. In researching this talk, I got a chance to ask him a few questions like; do you think that our schools today are making these eight TLCs a priority? His response was no surprise, it was essentially no. But he did say that many people do try to get this kind of education outside of the traditional arena, through reading and practices such as meditation or yoga.

But what I thought was his best response was that, much of education is oriented for better or worse towards making a living rather than making a life.

In 20__, Sir Ken Robinson gave the most popular Ted talk of all time. Schools kill creativity. His message is that creativity is as important as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.

A lot of parents watched those videos, some of those parents like mine counted it as one of the reasons they felt confident to pull their kids from traditional school to try something different. I realized I’m part of this small, but growing revolution of kids who are going about their education differently, and you know what? It freaks a lot of people out.

Even though I was only nine, when my parents pulled me out of the school system, I can still remember my mom being in tears when some of her friends told her she was crazy and it was a stupid idea.

Looking back, I’m thankful she didn’t cave to peer pressure, and I think she is too. So, out of the 200 million people that have watched Sir Ken Robinson’s talk, why aren’t there more kids like me out there?

Shane McConkey is my hero. I loved him because he was the world’s best skier. But then, one day I realized what I really loved about Shane, he was a hacker. Not a computer hacker, he hacked skiing. His creativity and inventions made skiing what it is today, and why I love to ski. A lot of people think of hackers as geeky computer nerds who live in their parent’s basement and spread computer viruses, but I don’t see it that way.

failure is so common in our life. no one can avoid it. when we fail in doing something, we often feel so depressed that we have no interest in other things. sometimes failure can also make us lose heart. therefore, no one wants to be a failure.

success is what we all hope for, because it can bring us a sense of pride and a good reputation. the moment we succeed, we always feel so proud, as if having everything in our hands. if one enjoys his continuous success in his career, he will be famous and worshiped by others.

however, failure is the mother of success. one failure doesn’t mean you can never be successful. it depends on what we do to deal with failure. those who are always afraid of failure and can’t go through it will never win. but as long as we can get some lessons and experience from our failure, we’ll be sure to succeed.

As time goes by, people are being busier and busier with working, such as signing their contracts, meeting their customers, drawing up the balance sheets of their companies and so on. In this circumstance, people forget our most excellent skill--smile.

There are a great many kinds of power of smile. First of all, common touch can be showed by a kind smile. Imagine that you go to a company to attend an audition. With a confident smile, you are more likely to answer the question better. Furthermore, smile can eliminate angry. As a philosopher said, smile before you begin to get angry. The last but not the least, it reflects calm of a person when he is in danger or in trouble.

The beneficial aspects cannot be stated completely in this passage. But you can understand its power when you smile.

Alright, well I've been asked to talk about something beautiful and I'd like to choose the White Cloud Temple. It is located in Beijing and it's on the west side of town. It's not that far away from a subway station, but you would need to take a bus, because it's a bit far to walk. I go there probably two or more times a year. It's a Taoist temple, probably the most active Taoist temple in Beijing. I'm a Taoist. But I go there more than just to pray. I really try to take a trip to find some time to rediscover myself. During the Spring Festival people jam into it because they hold what I think is the best carnival during Spring Festival. We call them Miao Huis. At that time the temple is very crowded, but most other times it's quite peaceful, and it's a good place to get away from all the people.

I think the reason it's so beautiful is because it is simple and it seems to blend in well with its environment. The small praying hall is very serene. It has a nice pool and a bridge. The Taoist motifs are quite simple but I think they are very charming. I love to go there during the winter after a big snowfall because it's at this time that it seems to be most mysterious. I choose this as the most beautiful because, to me, beauty is simplicity and natural design, and it also means it fits the environment it is in. I don't really like grand, elaborate temples. I prefer temples that seem powerful not because of their structures but because they are perfect for their simple beauty.

My good friend is a student of HengFu Road Middle School in class fivejunior one. She is 13 years old. She is 1 years older than me. And she has twobeautiful eyes. She has a cherry mouth and a little nose. She loves to her smile is very beautiful.

Do you know her hobby? Let me tell you! Her favourite sport is enjoys doing housework and playing puter games. So her mother loves her verymuch. And all of her family love her, too.

I am very happy to be her friends!

Let me begin my speech with a replay of scenes familiar to most, if not all, of those present here today. “Mum, I'm sorry, but I need 3,000 yuan for my tuition this year.”

“Mum, it is my friend's birthday tomorrow, I must buy her a present.”

“Mum, this jacket was out of fashion long ago, would you do me a favor? ”

Take. Take. Take. The relationship between a mother and a child always seems to follow such a pattern. I know my mother is always there for me, providing me with everything I need; from food to clothing, from tuition to pocket money. I never thought twice about all she did until one day she said, “Will there be a time that you'll say you have taken enough from me? ”

Like a child endlessly asking, we humans, throughout history, have been continually demanding what we desire from nature. We enjoy the comfort and beauty of our furniture, yet we never bother to think about the serious soil erosion caused by deforestation. We take it for granted that we must warm ourselves in winter times, yet we seldom realize the burning away of precious natural resources. We appreciate all the prosperity from the development of modern industry, yet few would give the slightest consideration to the global air and water pollution caused by industrial wastes. Our ruthless exploitation has permanently impaired our mother earth. As we tragically learned from last summer's floods. we cannot continue our carelessness.

but now here's where the bias comes in. our most important institutions, our schools and our workplaces, they are designed mostly for extroverts and for extroverts' need for lots of stimulation. and also we have this belief system right now that i call the new groupthink, which holds that all creativity and all productivity comes from a very oddly gregarious place.

so if you picture the typical classroom nowadays: when i was going to school, we sat in rows. we sat in rows of desks like this, and we did most of our work pretty autonomously. but nowadays, your typical classroom has pods of desks -- four or five or six or seven kids all facing each other. and kids are working in countless group assignments. even in subjects like math and creative writing, which you think would depend on solo flights of thought, kids are now expected to act as committee members. and for the kids who prefer to go off by themselves or just to work alone, those kids are seen as outliers often or, worse, as problem cases. and the vast majority of teachers reports believing that the ideal student is an extrovert as opposed to an introvert, even though introverts actually get better grades and are more knowledgeable, according to research. (laughter)

okay, same thing is true in our workplaces. now, most of us work in open plan offices, without walls, where we are subject to the constant noise and gaze of our coworkers. and when it comes to leadership, introverts are routinely passed over for leadership positions, even though introverts tend to be very careful, much less likely to take outsize risks -- which is something we might all favor nowadays. and interesting research by adam grant at the wharton school has found that introverted leaders often deliver better outcomes than extroverts do, because when they are managing proactive employees, they're much more likely to let those employees run with their ideas, whereas an extrovert can, quite unwittingly, get so excited about things that they're putting their own stamp on things, and other people's ideas might not as easily then bubble up to the surface.

now in fact, some of our transformative leaders in history have been introverts. i'll give you some examples. eleanor roosevelt, rosa parks, gandhi -- all these peopled described themselves as quiet and soft-spoken and even shy. and they all took the spotlight, even though every bone in their bodies was telling them not to. and this turns out to have a special power all its own, because people could feel that these leaders were at the helm, not because they enjoyed directing others and not out of the pleasure of being looked at; they were there because they had no choice, because they were driven to do what they thought was right.

Ronald Reagan: Remarks at the Brandenburg GateThank you.

  Thank you, very much.

Chancellor Kohl, Governing Mayor Diepgen, ladies and gentlemen: Twenty four years ago, President John F.

Kennedy visited Berlin, and speaking to the people of this city and the world at the city hall.

Well since then two other presidents have come, each in his turn to Berlin.

And today, I, myself, make my second visit to your city.We come to Berlin, we American Presidents, because its our duty to speak in this place of freedom.

But I must confess, we’re drawn here by other things as well; by the feeling of history in this city -- more than 500 years older than our own nation; by the beauty of the Grunewald and the Teirgarten; most of all, by your courage and determination.

Perhaps the composer, Paul Linke, understood something about American Presidents.

You see, like so many presidents before me, I come here today because wherever I go, whatever I do: “Ich hab noch einen hoffer in Berlin” [I still have a suitcase in Berlin.]Our gathering today is being broadcast throughout Western Europe and North America.om their air-raid shelters to find devastation.

Thousands of miles away, the people of the United States reached out to help.

And in 1947 Secretary of State -- as youve been told --George Marshall announced the creation of what would become known as the Marshall Plan.

Speaking precisely 40 years ago this month, he said: Our policy is directed not against any country or doctrine, but against hunger, poverty, desperation, and chaos. In the Reichstag a few moments ago, I saw a display commemorating this 40th anniversary of the Marshall Plan.

I was struck by the sign on a burnt-out, gutted structure that was being rebuilt.

I understand that Berliners of my own generation can remember seeing signs like it dotted throughout the western sectors of the city.

The sign read simply: The Marshall Plan is helping here to strengthen the free world.

A strong, free world in the West, that dream became real.

Japan rose from ruin to become an economic giant.

Adenauer, Erhard, Reuter, and other leaders understood the practical importance of liberty -- that just as truth can flourish only when the journalist is given freedom of speech, so prosperity can come about only when the farmer and businessman enjoy economic freedom.

From 1950 to 1960 alone, the standard of living in West Germany and Berlin doubled.Where four decades ago there was rubble, today in West Berlin there is the greatest industrial output of any city in Germany -- busy office blocks, fine homes and apartments, proud avenues, and the spreading lawns of parkland.

Where a citys culture seemed to have been destroyed, today there are two great universities, orchestras and an opera, countless theaters, and museums.

Where there was want, today theres abundance -- food, clothing, automobiles -- the wonderful goods of the Kudamm.

From devastation, from utter ruin, you Berliners have, in freedom, rebuilt a city that once again ranks as one of the greatest on earth.

The Soviets may have had other plans.

But my friends, there were a few things the Soviets didnt count on -- Berliner Herz, Berliner Humor, ja, und Berliner Schnauze.

[Berliner heart, Berliner humor, yes, and a Berliner Schnauze.]In the 1950s -- In the 1950s Khrushchev predicted: We will bury you.

But in the West today, we see a free world that has achieved a level of prosperity and well-being unprecedented in all human history.

In the Communist world, we see failure, technological backwardness, declining standards of health, *even want of the most basic kind -- too little food.

Even today, the Soviet Union still cannot feed itself.

After these four decades, then, there stands before the entire world one great and inescapable conclusion: Freedom leads to prosperity.

Freedom replaces the ancient hatreds among the nations with comity and peace.

Freedom is the victor.*And now -- now the Soviets themselves may, in a limited way, be coming to understand the importance of freedom.

We hear much from Moscow about a new policy of reform and openness.

Some political prisoners have been released.

Certain foreign news broadcasts are no longer being jammed.

Some economic enterprises have been permitted to operate with greater freedom from state control.*Are these the beginnings of profound changes in the Soviet state? Or are they token gestures, intended to raise false hopes in the West, *or to strengthen the Soviet system without changing it? We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty -- the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace.

General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate.

  Mr.Gorbachev, open this gate.

Mr.Gorbachev -- Mr.Gorbachev, tear down this wall!I understand the fear of war and the pain of division that afflict this continent, and I pledge to you my countrys efforts to help overcome these burdens.

To be sure, we in the West must resist Soviet expansion.

So, we must maintain defenses of unassailable strength.

Yet we seek peace; so we must strive to reduce arms on both sides.

Beginning 10 years ago, the Soviets challenged the Western alliance with a grave new threat, hundreds of new and more deadly SS-20 nuclear missiles capable of striking every capital in Europe.

The Western alliance responded by committing itself to a counter-deployment (unless the Soviets agreed to negotiate a better solution) -- namely, the elimination of such weapons on both sides.

For many months, the Soviets refused to bargain in earnestness.

As the alliance, in turn, prepared to go forward with its counter-deployment, there were difficult days, days of protests like those during my 1982 visit to this city; and the Soviets later walked away from the table. But through it all, the alliance held firm.

And I invite those who protested then -- I invite those who protest today -- to mark this fact: Because we remained strong, the Soviets came back to the table.

Because we remained strong, today we have within reach the possibility, not merely of limiting the growth of arms, but of eliminating, for the first time, an entire class of nuclear weapons from the face of the earth. As I speak, NATO ministers are meeting in Iceland to review the progress of our proposals for eliminating these weapons.

At the talks in Geneva, we have also proposed deep cuts in strategic offensive weapons.

And the Western allies have likewise made far-reaching proposals to reduce the danger of conventional war and to place a total ban on chemical weapons.

While we pursue these arms reductions, I pledge to you that we will maintain the capacity to deter Soviet aggression at any level at which it might occur.

And in cooperation with many of our allies, the United States is pursuing the Strategic Defense Initiative -- research to base deterrence not on the threat of offensive retaliation, but on defenses that truly defend; on systems, in short, that will not target populations, but shield them.

By these means we seek to increase the safety of Europe and all the world.

But we must remember a crucial fact: East and West do not mistrust each other because we are armed; we are armed because we mistrust each other.

And our differences are not about weapons but about liberty.

When President Kennedy spoke at the City Hall those 24 years ago, freedom was encircled; Berlin was under siege.

And today, despite all the pressures upon this city, Berlin stands secure in its liberty.

And freedom itself is transforming the globe. In the Philippines, in South and Central America, democracy has been given a rebirth.

Throughout the Pacific, free markets are working miracle after miracle of economic growth.

In the industrialized nations, a technological revolution is taking place, a revolution marked by rapid, dramatic advances in computers and telecommunications.

In Europe, only one nation and those it controls refuse to join the community of freedom.

Yet in this age of redoubled economic growth, of information and innovation, the Soviet Union faces a choice: It must make fundamental changes, or it will become obsolete.Today thus represents a moment of hope.

We in the West stand ready to cooperate with the East to promote true openness, to break down barriers that separate people, to create a safer, freer world.

And surely there is no better place than Berlin, the meeting place of East and West, to make a start.

Free people of Berlin: Today, as in the past, the United States stands for the strict observance and full implementation of all parts of the Four Power Agreement of 1971.

Let us use this occasion, the 750th anniversary of this city, to usher in a new era, to seek a still fuller, richer life for the Berlin of the future.

Together, let us maintain and develop the ties between the Federal Republic and the Western sectors of Berlin, which is permitted by the 1971 agreement.

And I invite Mr.Gorbachev: Let us work to bring the Eastern and Western parts of the city closer together, so that all the inhabitants of all Berlin can enjoy the benefits that come with life in one of the great cities of the world. To open Berlin still further to all Europe, East and West, let us expand the vital air access to this city, finding ways of making commercial air service to Berlin more convenient, more comfortable, and more economical.

We look to the day when West Berlin can become one of the chief aviation hubs in all central Europe.

With -- with our French and British partners, the United States is prepared to help bring international meetings to Berlin.

It would be only fitting for Berlin to serve as the site of United Nations meetings, or world conferences on human rights and arms control or other issues that call for international cooperation. There is no better way to establish hope for the future than to enlighten young minds, and we would be honored to sponsor summer youth exchanges, cultural events, and other programs for young Berliners from the East.

Our French and British friends, Im certain, will do the same.

And its my hope that an authority can be found in East Berlin to sponsor visits from young people of the Western sectors.

One final proposal, one close to my heart: Sport represents a source of enjoyment and ennoblement, and you may have noted that the Republic of Korea -- South Korea -- has offered to permit certain events of the 1988 Olympics to take place in the North.

International sports competitions of all kinds could take place in both parts of this city.

And what better way to demonstrate to the world the openness of this city than to offer in some future year to hold the Olympic games here in Berlin, East and West.In these four decades, as I have said, you Berliners have built a great city.

Youve done so in spite of threats -- the Soviet attempts to impose the East-mark, the blockade.

Today the city thrives in spite of the challenges implicit in the very presence of this wall.

What keeps you here? Certainly theres a great deal to be said for your fortitude, for your defiant courage.

But I believe theres something deeper, something that involves Berlins whole look and feel and way of life -- not mere sentiment.

No one could live long in Berlin without being completely disabused of illusions.

Something, instead, that has seen the difficulties of life in Berlin but chose to accept them, that continues to build this good and proud city in contrast to a surrounding totalitarian presence, that refuses to release human energies or aspirations, something that speaks with a powerful voice of affirmation, that says yes to this city, yes to the future, yes to freedom.

In a word, I would submit that what keeps you in Berlin is love.Love both profound and abiding.

Perhaps this gets to the root of the matter, to the most fundamental distinction of all between East and West.

The totalitarian world produces backwardness because it does such violence to the spirit, thwarting the human impulse to create, to enjoy, to worship.

The totalitarian world finds even symbols of love and of worship an affront.

Years ago, before the East Germans began rebuilding their churches, they erected a secular structure: the television tower at Alexander Platz.

Virtually ever since, the authorities have been working to correct what they view as the towers one major flaw: treating the glass sphere at the top with paints and chemicals of every kind.

Yet even today when the sun strikes that sphere, that sphere that towers over all Berlin, the light makes the sign of the cross.

There in Berlin, like the city itself, symbols of love, symbols of worship, cannot be suppressed.

As I looked out a moment ago from the Reichstag, that embodiment of German unity, I noticed words crudely spray-painted upon the wall, perhaps by a young Berliner: This wall will fall.

Beliefs become reality.Yes, across Europe, this wall will fall, for it cannot withstand faith; it cannot withstand the truth.

  The wall cannot withstand freedom.

And I would like, before I close, to say one word.

I have read, and I have been questioned since Ive been here about certain demonstrations against my coming.

And I would like to say just one thing, and to those who demonstrate so.

I wonder if they have ever asked themselves that if they should have the kind of government they apparently seek, no one would ever be able to do what theyre doing again.Thank you and God bless you all.

  Thank you.

Good afternoon, everybody. I just want to say a few words about the landmark vote that the House of Representatives is poised to(隨時(shí)準(zhǔn)備著) take today -- a vote that can bring us one step closer to making real the promise of quality, affordable(支付得起) health care for the American people.

For the better part of a year now, members of the House and the Senate have been working diligently(勤奮地) and constructively to craft legislation that will benefit millions of American families and millions of American businesses who urgently need it. For the first time ever, they've passed bills through every single committee responsible for reform. They've brought us closer than we have ever been to passing health insurance reform on behalf of the American people.

Now is the time to finish the job. The bill that the House has produced will provide stability and security for Americans who have insurance; quality, affordable options for those who don't; and lower costs for American families and American businesses. And as I've insisted from the beginning, it is a bill that is fully paid for and will actually reduce our long-term federal deficit(赤字,不足).

This bill is change that the American people urgently need. Don't just take my word for it. Consider the national groups who've come out in support of this bill on behalf of their members: The Consumers Union supports it because it will create -- and I quote -- "a more secure, affordable health care system for the American people."

The American Medical Association and the American Nurses Association support it on behalf of doctors and nurses and medical professionals who know firsthand what's broken in our current system, and who see what happens when their patients can't get the care they need because of insurance industry bureaucracies(官僚政治).

The National Farmers Union supports this bill because it will control costs for farmers and ranchers(牧場主), and address the unique challenges rural Americans face when it comes to receiving quality care.

And the AARP supports it because it will achieve the goal for which the AARP has been fighting for decades -- reducing the cost of health care, expanding coverage for America's seniors, and strengthening Medicare for the long haul.

Now, no bill can ever contain everything that everybody wants, or please every constituency(選區(qū)) and every district. That's an impossible task. But what is possible, what's in our grasp right now is the chance to prevent a future where every day 14,000 Americans continue to lose their health insurance, and every year 18,000 Americans die because they don't have it; a future where crushing costs keep small businesses from succeeding and big businesses from competing in the global economy; a future where countless dreams are deferred or scaled back because of a broken system we could have fixed when we had the chance.

What we can do right now is choose a better future and pass a bill that brings us to the very cusp(尖頭,尖端) of building what so many generations of Americans have sought to build -- a better health care system for this country.

Millions of Americans are watching right now. Their families and their businesses are counting on us. After all, this is why they sent us here, to finally confront the challenges that Washington had been putting off for decades -- to make their lives better, to leave this country stronger than we found it.

I just came from the Hill where I talked to the members of Congress there, and I reminded them that opportunities like this come around maybe once in a generation. Most public servants pass through their entire careers without a chance to make as important a difference in the lives of their constituents and the life of this country. This is their moment, this is our moment, to live up to the trust that the American people have placed in us -- even when it's hard; especially when it's hard. This is our moment to deliver.

I urge members of Congress to rise to this moment. Answer the call of history, and vote yes for health insurance reform for America.

In Central China, when a baby is born, the happy father will send redboiled eggs to announce the news. Eggs with a black pointed end and dots in aneven number such as six or eight, indicates a boy''s birth; those without ablack point and in an odd number like a five or seven will say the baby is agirl.

watching all the campus, is so familiar with, can not help but brought back memories of my ... ...

recently, the news that u.s attack on china's internet is always exposed. and the question of how to stay online safely raises a lot of discussion in our country. as a result, in the era of rapid development of network, we must take measures to protect our security of privacy and property effectively.

from my perspective, in the first place, we should call attention to our personal information. not only do we not offer them at random in some strange websites, but we need to distinguish right from wrong among the numerous websites. furthermore, it is inevitable that some secure anti-virus soft wares can be installed. and it will make it possible for that network can run more steadily. in addition to doing some work by ourselves, the government needs to draw up some policies to preserve national cyber security. it involves probing for deeply rooted reasons, devising creative solutions, developing high-tech talents and strengthening the supervision.

although scientists still cannot overcome the problem completely, they are studying a great deal about how to protect our national cyber security. however, consciousness of cyber security should not decline. only in this way, we just enjoy the convenience brought by the network.

  Everyone has a dream.

Now I want to say something about my dream. What is my dream? I often ask myself. In my mind, everyone shall have his own dream. I think that having a dream means that we have an idea, and then we will do all the things to achieve the target. As long as we have a goal to be realized, we wont be blind at least.

My dream is to become a successful doctor, helping those sick people and saving their lives. Of course, to be a good doctor is very difficult, but I will do whatever I can do to keep everyone healthy. Thats my dream. I want to try my best to help the poor sick people of our country. I want to let them have an opportunity to receive excellent treatments for their illnesses without having to pay much or just enjoy them free. China is a developing country which needs good medicine and good doctors, especially in the countryside and distant villages. Now Im a junior student on Grade One, all my classmates and I are working hard. We all know that the entrance exam of high schools coming in the year of 20xx is a big challenge for us, so we must study harder and harder in order to go to a good high school. Thus after we finish our senior high school, we are able to go to a good university. Finally, we can find a good job in society.

My dream is also that although at present Im good at study, Ill still try my best to be the study winner. Now everything I do is close to my dream. I feel life is fill with hope and is colorful, and I have enough confidence to realize my dream.

I know that fantasy is something hard to realize, but dream can. Ill work hard for my dreams, Ill never give up.

Everybody is afraid of failure, because it means what they do is useless and they waste their energy and time. But people get the wrong idea about failure, in fact, failure is also success. If people want to be successful, they need to take action. Failure at least means people have tried to do, what’s more, people can learn from their unsuccessful experience, so that they can improve their methods. Every failure means the closeness of success, we should take the positive attitude to failure, we can get over it soon and people finally can get the victory. So when we meet the difficulties, don’t be afraid of the bad result, just take action.

  Dear:

“Once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. To all the suitors who came to the king’s palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each next to impossible. One day, into the king’s palace came a handsome young prince…" Well, you know the rest. The three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess’s hand triumphantly.

And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "And they live happily every after."

Why aren’t we tired of something so fanciful,so unrealistic, and,I would say,so unimaginative? How can a story like that endure generations of repetition`?Because,I think,it is a typical success story. It is highly philosophical and symbolic. By implication,we see a 4—step definition of success:1)a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess;2)challenges to be met,as represented by the three tasks;3)the process of surmounting difficulties,as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through;and 4)the reward of success,as represented by the happy marriage.

The story not only caters to everyone’s inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. If a person inherits his father’s millions and leads an easy life,he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success",to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it,the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give another analogy.

If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper,so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenal’s defenders to defend,so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe,to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge,in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.

The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. In acquiring the ability to do the same as you can,he or she achieve success. That’s why we greatly admire Stephen Hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair,he has contributed greatly to the field of science.

I myself,a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest. But I chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. Now here I am. If I come out first,it will be a great success for me. If I come out last—I hope this will not be the case—but if I come out last,I will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training—to do more assertive,to be brave in face of difficulties. For me,it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is,in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because I have truly gained by participating.

Let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4—step definition of success. You my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather,it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. The ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.
