They must see Americans as strange liberators. The Vietnamese people proclaimed their own independence in 1954 -- in 1945 rather -- after a combined French and Japanese occupation and before the communist revolution in China. They were led by Ho Chi Minh. Even though they quoted the American Declaration of Independence in their own document of freedom, we refused to recognize them. Instead, we decided to support France in its reconquest of her former colony. Our government felt then that the Vietnamese people were not ready for independence, and we again fell victim to the deadly Western arrogance that has poisoned the international atmosphere for so long. With that tragic decision we rejected a revolutionary government seeking self-determination and a government that had been established not by China -- for whom the Vietnamese have no great love -- but by clearly indigenous forces that included some communists. For the peasants this new government meant real land reform, one of the most important needs in their lives.
For nine years following 1945 we denied the people of Vietnam the right of independence. For nine years we vigorously supported the French in their abortive effort to recolonize Vietnam. Before the end of the war we were meeting eighty percent of the French war costs. Even before the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu, they began to despair of their reckless action, but we did not. We encouraged them with our huge financial and military supplies to continue the war even after they had lost the will. Soon we would be paying almost the full costs of this tragic attempt at recolonization.
After the French were defeated, it looked as if independence and land reform would come again through the Geneva Agreement. But instead there came the United States, determined that Ho should not unify the temporarily divided nation, and the peasants watched again as we supported one of the most vicious modern dictators, our chosen man, Premier Diem. The peasants watched and cringed as Diem ruthlessly rooted out all opposition, supported their extortionist landlords, and refused even to discuss reunification with the North. The peasants watched as all this was presided over by United States' influence and then by increasing numbers of United States troops who came to help quell the insurgency that Diem's methods had aroused. When Diem was overthrown they may have been happy, but the long line of military dictators seemed to offer no real change, especially in terms of their need for land and peace.
The only change came from America, as we increased our troop commitments in support of governments which were singularly corrupt, inept, and without popular support. All the while the people read our leaflets and received the regular promises of peace and democracy and land reform. Now they languish under our bombs and consider us, not their fellow Vietnamese, the real enemy. They move sadly and apathetically as we herd them off the land of their fathers into concentration camps where minimal social needs are rarely met. They know they must move on or be destroyed by our bombs.
So they go, primarily women and children and the aged. They watch as we poison their water, as we kill a million acres of their crops. They must weep as the bulldozers roar through their areas preparing to destroy the precious trees. They wander into the hospitals with at least twenty casualties from American firepower for one Vietcong-inflicted injury. So far we may have killed a million of them, mostly children. They wander into the towns and see thousands of the children, homeless, without clothes, running in packs on the streets like animals. They see the children degraded by our soldiers as they beg for food. They see the children selling their sisters to our soldiers, soliciting for their mothers.
What do the peasants think as we ally ourselves with the landlords and as we refuse to put any action into our many words concerning land reform? What do they think as we test out our latest weapons on them, just as the Germans tested out new medicine and new tortures in the concentration camps of Europe? Where are the roots of the independent Vietnam we claim to be building? Is it among these voiceless ones?
We have destroyed their two most cherished institutions: the family and the village. We have destroyed their land and their crops. We have cooperated in the crushing of the nation's only noncommunist revolutionary political force, the unified Buddhist Church. We have supported the enemies of the peasants of Saigon. We have corrupted their women and children and killed their men.
Now there is little left to build on, save bitterness. Soon the only solid physical foundations remaining will be found at our military bases and in the concrete of the concentration camps we call "fortified hamlets." The peasants may well wonder if we plan to build our new Vietnam on such grounds as these. Could we blame them for such thoughts? We must speak for them and raise the questions they cannot raise. These, too, are our brothers.
Perhaps a more difficult but no less necessary task is to speak for those who have been designated as our enemies. What of the National Liberation Front, that strangely anonymous group we call "VC" or "communists"? What must they think of the United States of America when they realize that we permitted the repression and cruelty of Diem, which helped to bring them into being as a resistance group in the South? What do they think of our condoning the violence which led to their own taking up of arms? How can they believe in our integrity when now we speak of "aggression from the North" as if there were nothing more essential to the war? How can they trust us when now we charge them with violence after the murderous reign of Diem and charge them with violence while we pour every new weapon of death into their land? Surely we must understand their feelings, even if we do not condone their actions. Surely we must see that the men we supported pressed them to their violence. Surely we must see that our own computerized plans of destruction simply dwarf their greatest acts.
How do they judge us when our officials know that their membership is less than twenty-five percent communist, and yet insist on giving them the blanket name? What must they be thinking when they know that we are aware of their control of major sections of Vietnam, and yet we appear ready to allow national elections in which this highly organized political parallel government will not have a part? They ask how we can speak of free elections when the Saigon press is censored and controlled by the military junta. And they are surely right to wonder what kind of new government we plan to help form without them, the only party in real touch with the peasants. They question our political goals and they deny the reality of a peace settlement from which they will be excluded. Their questions are frighteningly relevant. Is our nation planning to build on political myth again, and then shore it up upon the power of new violence?
Here is the true meaning and value of compassion and nonviolence, when it helps us to see the enemy's point of view, to hear his questions, to know his assessment of ourselves. For from his view we may indeed see the basic weaknesses of our own condition, and if we are mature, we may learn and grow and profit from the wisdom of the brothers who are called the opposition.
So, too, with Hanoi. In the North, where our bombs now pummel the land, and our mines endanger the waterways, we are met by a deep but understandable mistrust. To speak for them is to explain this lack of confidence in Western words, and especially their distrust of American intentions now. In Hanoi are the men who led the nation to independence against the Japanese and the French, the men who sought membership in the French Commonwealth and were betrayed by the weakness of Paris and the willfulness of the colonial armies. It was they who led a second struggle against French domination at tremendous costs, and then were persuaded to give up the land they controlled between the thirteenth and seventeenth parallel as a temporary measure at Geneva. After 1954 they watched us conspire with Diem to prevent elections which could have surely brought Ho Chi Minh to power over a united Vietnam, and they realized they had been betrayed again. When we ask why they do not leap to negotiate, these things must be remembered.
Also, it must be clear that the leaders of Hanoi considered the presence of American troops in support of the Diem regime to have been the initial military breach of the Geneva Agreement concerning foreign troops. They remind us that they did not begin to send troops in large numbers and even supplies into the South until American forces had moved into the tens of thousands.
Hanoi remembers how our leaders refused to tell us the truth about the earlier North Vietnamese overtures for peace, how the president claimed that none existed when they had clearly been made. Ho Chi Minh has watched as America has spoken of peace and built up its forces, and now he has surely heard the increasing international rumors of American plans for an invasion of the North. He knows the bombing and shelling and mining we are doing are part of traditional pre-invasion strategy. Perhaps only his sense of humor and of irony can save him when he hears the most powerful nation of the world speaking of aggression as it drops thousands of bombs on a poor, weak nation more than eight hundred, or rather, eight thousand miles away from its shores.
At this point I should make it clear that while I have tried in these last few minutes to give a voice to the voiceless in Vietnam and to understand the arguments of those who are called "enemy," I am as deeply concerned about our own troops there as anything else. For it occurs to me that what we are submitting them to in Vietnam is not simply the brutalizing process that goes on in any war where armies face each other and seek to destroy. We are adding cynicism to the process of death, for they must know after a short period there that none of the things we claim to be fighting for are really involved. Before long they must know that their government has sent them into a struggle among Vietnamese, and the more sophisticated surely realize that we are on the side of the wealthy, and the secure, while we create a hell for the poor.
Somehow this madness must cease. We must stop now. I speak as a child of God and brother to the suffering poor of Vietnam. I speak for those whose land is being laid waste, whose homes are being destroyed, whose culture is being subverted. I speak for the poor of America who are paying the double price of smashed hopes at home, and death and corruption in Vietnam. I speak as a citizen of the world, for the world as it stands aghast at the path we have taken. I speak as one who loves America, to the leaders of our own nation: The great initiative in this war is ours; the initiative to stop it must be ours.
This is the message of the great Buddhist leaders of Vietnam. Recently one of them wrote these words, and I quote:
Each day the war goes on the hatred increases in the heart of the Vietnamese and in the hearts of those of humanitarian instinct. The Americans are forcing even their friends into becoming their enemies. It is curious that the Americans, who calculate so carefully on the possibilities of military victory, do not realize that in the process they are incurring deep psychological and political defeat. The image of America will never again be the image of revolution, freedom, and democracy, but the image of violence and militarism .
If we continue, there will be no doubt in my mind and in the mind of the world that we have no honorable intentions in Vietnam. If we do not stop our war against the people of Vietnam immediately, the world will be left with no other alternative than to see this as some horrible, clumsy, and deadly game we have decided to play. The world now demands a maturity of America that we may not be able to achieve. It demands that we admit that we have been wrong from the beginning of our adventure in Vietnam, that we have been detrimental to the life of the Vietnamese people. The situation is one in which we must be ready to turn sharply from our present ways. In order to atone for our sins and errors in Vietnam, we should take the initiative in bringing a halt to this tragic war.

Ladies and Gentlemen , Good afternoon! I?m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. today my topic is “youth”. I hope you will like it , and found the importance in your youth so that more cherish it.
First I want to ask you some questions:
1、 Do you know what is youth?
2、 How do you master your youth?
Youth
Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life .
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul . Worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .
Whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being ?s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what?s next and the joy of the game of living . In the center of your heart and my heart there?s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .
When the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80.
That?s all !
Thank you!

What we cannot afford to lose
We cannot lose innovation
There is a wonderful word which expresses the most original motions and desires among human-beings. With solving any kind of imperfections, our world has moved ahead. This is the word “innovation” that we cannot afford to lose.
We chicaned every detail of the innovation. Thousands years before, we created fire when we took a stone to knock another one. Since Han Dynasty, four great inventions had been created and it is one of the greatest signs that China become to the ancient civilized country. And nowadays, thousands of software, products, architectures and public facilities have upgraded more than that about 100 years ago. So how did these happen? What will you do if you are not satisfied with your tools anymore? What will you do if old mode cannot afford to develop in a company? There is no doubt that we should innovate no matter where we are and what we do. Not because of the design itself, but actually for its intended purpose.
If there was no Apple, everyone could not imagine how to contact others easily and enjoy a better Internet surfing.
If there was no Microsoft, perhaps we still worked in a dim office and duplicate some troublesome documents. If there was no Newton, and no theory of gravity, maybe I will win the Nobel Prize like Newton rather than just standing here. I have heard that three apple changed the world. The first one seduced Eve. The second one awakened Newton. The third one was in the hands of Steve Jobs. We sort of think the innovation of the world began with apple. I imagine lots of people want to become another Newton or Jobs right now with just one hand to change the world, right? Have the innovation to follow your heart. It somehow already reflects what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
Via questioning, we can start to innovate. Via innovating, we can start to create better lives. No innovation, no improvement. No improvement, no success. And no success, no civilization. Now, our time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life! Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice! Don't let yourself down! It is the innovation that we cannot afford to lose!

Good morning:
Honorable judges, dear teachers and close friends. I’m very glad to stand here to share my speech with you. Today I’m going to talk about Love and Take care of Nature. Each life on the earth has a long and touching evolutionary story. From the origin, the lives of the human being are equal to those of others; they both are the composing parts of Mother Nature. Nevertheless, for some inexplicable reasons, the human becomes the spirits of all creatures. Of course, it is the result of the evolution, but still we should be grateful to all our companions in nature for the opportunity they offer. In spite of this, humans cannot live without earth.
They live on the earth, drink the sweet water, and enjoy the sunshine, the air, the sky, the fruit; the grains utilize the energy and so on. In a word, the human being cannot live without nature, and Mother Nature makes us grow stronger. I do not like the word "Pet", but preferring the word "Animal" instead. I have been loving animal since I was just a little boy. When thinking of the "Pet Fashion", I always feel much annoyed. For the animals will be given a shackle and lose their liberty if they become someone's pets. Their natural attribution can be deprived, too. Up to now, relying on their scientific power, the human have opened up too much and over developed nature, in order to fill up their growing appetites of wealth.
They destroy the balance of nature, however, they don't realize, their own development and existence will be threatened. Therefore, our sights should be focused on nature and we should try to develop the concept of "keeping human and nature in unity". We should lay emphasis on our education with consider cultural and natural emotion. To use the vivid example to wake up the conscience in people's hearts.
Thank you!

Hello, everybody !it is my great honor to be here to share my idea with you .Today,I will talk something about DREAM——A word that has changed the world .
“What do you think is the word that has really changed our world ”
When I was asked about this question for the first time ,without thinking it too much ,a word flash into my mind ——DREAM ,D-R-E-A-M.People more or less dream about different things ,to be a teacher ,a doctor ,a scientist ,a businessman and so on .All these people who have dreams should be respected ,because Dreams make the world go around .We grow great by our dreams. All big men are great dreamers in their youth.Everyone has a dream ,and everything starts as one’s daydream.
Martin Luther king had a dream. He desired for a future where blacks and whites would coexist harmoniously as equals.By speaking the way he did,he educated,he inspired,he informed not just the people there, but people throughout America and unborn generations. He pushed forward the pace of American black society towards the racial equality .
Thomas Edison had a dream. He dreamed of a lamp that could be operated by electricity, began where he stood to put his dream into action, and despite more than ten thousand failures,he stood by that dream until he made it a physical reality! And today, his dream lights up the world at night.
Walt Disney had a dream. This,in itself, wasn't unusual -- he was always dreaming. He dreamed of making the first animated feature film, and of building an amusement park that parents could enjoy right along with their kids.Walt Disney empowered his dream and today,Disneyland,Disney world and Disney theme parks attract around the world thrill millions of visitors each and every year.
John F.kennedy had a dream. He wanted to land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth so as to restore faith in the American way of life.John F.kennedy empowered his dream and 8 years later Neil Armstrong stepped on the face of the moon. The moon landing certainly gave Americans new found confidence.
Dream --- A word that has changed the world Yes ,I would say so ,wouldn’t you
Youth is a special life relay station ,the growth with the worry ,the life feeling become aware happily with the dream ,collected a unique youth melody in here .
We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose,so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about. And most importantly ,You are the one you choose to be.
It is easy to waste our lives ,our days ,our minutes .It is easy to exist than living .So hold fast to your dreams,For if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird,That cannot fly.Hold fast to your dreams,For when dreams go,life is a barren field,Frozen with snow.

Should Smoking in Public Places be Banned?
Nowadays many countries in the world have passed laws to ban smoking in public places. Some smokers claim that their rights are infringed if smoking is forbidden in public places. However, most non-smokers regard the ban as good news. As far as I’m concerned, smoking should be banned in all the public places such as restaurants, theaters and public squares.
On the one hand, smoking is harmful both for smokers themselves and others. It is reported that every year smoking causes millions of death around the world. On the other hand, smoking pollutes the air. Just imagine that you sit in a restaurant full of smoke, how can you enjoy your meal there? Besides, smoking is bad for the elevation of a country’s image in the world.
I believe if smoking is banned in all the public places, most of us will breathe in more fresh and clean air. And the health condition of all the people will be greatly improved.

A Loving Gentleness
Do you know what a loving gentleness is like? Have you had a taste of it or shown it to others?
Surely you can get some idea of it from swallows under the eaves. They show it when they are busy flying to and fro to feed their nestlings. You can see it from the moon shedding cool light over the scorched land so that it becomes comfortable. You can also feel it when you listen to the clock ticking steadily, so considerate as not to disturb a sweet dream. Again you can find it in the heart of a young girl. She is charming because of her loving tenderness.
It's also a picture of loving tenderness for a youngster playing a pampered child in his or her mother' lap. But later, the person is so much changed by fate that tenderness is gone together with values of life. Some people are born uncouth. But tossed by life's storms they become gentle and good-humored unexpectedly, like mushrooms sprouting from the root of the tree of life.
True, gentleness or a tender care is often associated with love and kindness. It can also be found in a good- natured or broad-minded person. It is not fair to think that it has anything to do with weakness.
Gentle as spring breeze, it cracks the frozen river with its light touch. Soft as cotton, it renders a steel ball bouncing high from the ground paralyzed in its embrace. Similarly, tenderhearted as friendship, it melts the toughness of an ironwilled man and reduces him to grateful tears.
A loving gentleness is too subtle to describe. Though it seems invisible, inaudible and evasive to the touch, it is still perceptible. It is the quintessence of kindness, enthusiasm, love and moral support. It gives strength and power. It is the source of beauty.

Today’ college students face many pressures, mainly from parents’ expectation, study, economy, employment and all kinds of competition. Although pressure, to some extent, can provide motivation, overdue pressure has a serious negative affect. Pressure can destroy a student’s confidence. More seriously it might make some students lose control of their emotions and behaviors. Considering the great damage of overdue pressure, college students should learn how to relieve pressure. First, we should have a right evaluation of ourselves, so it’s to make use of advantages and avoid disadvantages. Second, we should set a clear aim of struggle. The aim can give us motivation and make us become active. Third, attending collective activities is an effective way to relieve pressure. Finally, if you find pressure is nearly beyond your control, you’d better turn to professional psychological guidance. As to me, my pressure is mainly from future employment. In order to reduce upset, I ask my parents to help me analyze my advantages and disadvantages and produce more practical job objection. So my employment pressure has been relieved greatly. Now I become very confident in my future, and I do believe I can get an ideal job after my graduation.

"The mother line, wandering clothing. Leaving thick seam, Italy has to fear. Who grass inch heart, reported in the apartments?" These poems, Meng Jiao, a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty, vividly and vividly expressed their mother's deep love for their children and the gratitude of their children to their mother.
Mother love is great, mother's care for me is meticulous. The mother not only in life is to care about me, often Wenhanwennuan, still learning enthusiasm, good at giving systematic guidance. My mother often tells me stories about hard work and learning by celebrities, great men and scientists when they are young. They teach me to follow their example, learn from them, and make a good kid who is good at learning, advancing, civilized and polite. Mother to me like the spring sunshine for me to bring warmth. As a daughter in reading, I often warn myself to study hard and repay my mother with excellent results.
Today is mother's Day is Sunday, I changed the habit of sleeping in on Sunday, crept up to two out of an egg from the fridge, then imitate granny usually boiled, put water in the pot on the gas stove. After the water was opened, two eggs were laid in the boiling water, and in a little while two white oval eggs were formed in the pot. I turned off the gas, took out two bowls from the cupboard, filled each bowl with an egg, a bowl gave her grandma, and a bowl gave it to her mother.
When I took the mother handed the eggs, I excitedly asked: "how do you think of my eggs today?" I smiled and said to my mother, "usually you and grandma prepare breakfast for me. Today is mother's day. I want to make breakfast for myself as a gift for mother's day." After listening to me, my mother held me and said, "you are good!" My mother and I cled together, a warm heat flow in my heart.

Ninety three percent of the worlds water is salt water and cannot be drunk. Fresh water only accounts for seven percent, while drinking water only accounts for eight percent. Five billion people in the world depend on drinking only 0.8% of the fresh water. Look, how valuable the water is!
How do we get the tap water we use every day? Dont think running water is all right. It was the worker uncle of the waterworks who introduced the river water or groundwater into the factory, put the water in the sedimentation tank, added the medicine for disinfection and sterilization, and removed the harmful and impurities. In this way, many pipes were buried underground. These pipes are connected one by one. They are the result of the hard work of many workers in Waterworks day and night. When we turn on the tap, we should think of how many workers uncles hard work are contained in the water!
Students, we are the little masters of the country. We should form a good idea and good habit of saving water from childhood. No matter in or out of school, we should pay attention to water conservation to avoid waste of water resources, do not let the tap drip, try to make rational and recycling use of water resources. We should be a good child who saves water with practical actions.

There are many forms of life on earth: organisms, animals, plants, and human beings. Life is given to man only once. And there are many natural disasters that will destroy life. Since life is short and preeious, everyone wants to enjoy longevity.
The mode of life differes from person to person. A person's life may be one of great achievement. He may also lead a quiet life. A career man has a busy life. A self content man has an easy one. Yet everyone is writing his own life story with his actions.
The intelligent and diligent person makes his life full of vigor and vitality. He works and plays with zest. A lazy man's life is dull and spiritless. While in life he is lifeless.
As a youth, I choose to live a busy and meaningful life.

All the materials we need to live with come from nature, but we should also repay the nature, rather than blindly solicit. For example, we should plant more trees and take actions to protect the environment. In addition, we have to control population. Due to excessive population growth, human beings require much more natural resources than before, which lead to excessive pressure on nature. In order to long-term development, the population growth must be controlled. We all come from nature which is our homeland, so we must try best to protect it.

Before, I would be willing to celebrate the festival, especially the Spring Festival and the Mid Autumn Festival. However, this years Spring Festival is not the same as in previous years.
Before the new year, because of the severe snow disaster in the south, many uncles and aunts did not rest on the Spring Festival and insisted on their jobs. My father didnt go home for the Spring Festival during the Spring Festival. He insisted on the first line of coal mine production, for more coal and overtime work to support the coal in the south. Coal miners made their contributions to the production and life in the south. Although my father could not go home with us for the new year, I was very happy, and I was proud of him.
At eight p. m. thirty in the year, my mother and I sat on the couch to watch the Spring Festival. How wonderful the Spring Festival Gala is! Talk about the crosstalk, sing and sing in a moment, and dance in a moment. Its really busy! All of a sudden, mom asked me what I wanted in 20xx. I replied, "in 20xx, my wish is:study hard and make progress every day. I will make a careful and conscientious friend. I will become an excellent young pioneer.

What is my favorite invention?
We knew there had been many inventions at the last century, for example, electric light bulb, telephone, phonograph, mimeograph machine, automobile, airplane, atomic weapon, computer and so on. What is my favorite invention?
Personally, my favorite invention should be computer. In the old days, manyscientists took much time to calculate and deal with research data, so theeffective time in doing research was relatively shortened. For millions of timesof calculating per second by computer, the researchers may have enough time tostudy more important issues. The processing of experiment results became verysimple and easy. Aren’t those all evidences that the computer is one of thegreatest inventions in the last century, are those?

Everyone has his own ideal. The ideal may be a desire to acquire power and rank from a selfish motive. It may also be a desire to do something good to our society.
My ideal resulted from my knowledge about scientists and science. When I was a junior middle school student, I read a lot of books about scientists and inventors such as Edison, Bell, etc. And I was greatly inspired by their achievement. By and by I knew that the progress of mankind was brought about by compass, printing seismograph, steam engine, computer, space raft, etc. Science is a great force to push our society forward. And if a person makes contributions to science, his or her life will be worthwhile.
Now I'm determined to devote my whole life to science. I will work hard to reach the peak of science

It is cold and dry outside. The wind often blows strongly. The days areshorter and the nights are longer.
Many animals go to sleep. They will sleep for a long time till the springcomes.
People don’t like to go outside. They have to wear heavy coats, scarves andgloves. But children like to be outside. Because it often snows. There is snowaround.
There is ice on the ground. Children can throw snowballs, make thesnowmen.
Oh, look. What a surprise! Do you see? The river is frozen!
Here come the boys, there come the girls, they are skating in the riverhappily.
Oh! Winter comes. It is really an interesting season. It has so muchfun!

Who doesn’t love love? It’s one of the best, purest emotions out there. This means, of course, that it has the most drama connected to it. Everyone worries about collecting a lot of relationship baggage while they’re young, but the truth is it’s going to happen regardless of how you try to avoid it.
Instead of trying to prevent lots of missteps, read these tips and find out what you should know about love when you’re still young. Find comfort in knowing that everyone goes through these things, and we all make it out on the other side.
I know what you're thinking. You think I've lost my way, and somebody's going to come on the stage in aminute and guide me gently back to my seat. (Applause) I get that all the timein Dubai. "Here on holiday are you, dear?" (Laughter) "Come tovisit the children? How long are you staying?"
Well actually, I hope for a while longer yet. I have been living and teaching in theGulf for over 30 years. (Applause) And in that time, I have seen a lot ofchanges. Now that statistic is quite shocking. And I want to talk to you todayabout language loss and the globalization of English. I want to tell you aboutmy friend who was teaching English to adults in Abu Dhabi. And one fine day,she decided to take them into the garden to teach them some nature vocabulary. But it was she who ended up learning all the Arabic words for the local plants,as well as their uses -- medicinal uses, cosmetics, cooking, herbal. How didthose students get all that knowledge? Of course, from their grandparents andeven their great-grandparents. It's not necessary to tell you how important itis to be able to communicate across generations.
But sadly, today, languages are dying at an unprecedented rate. Alanguage dies every 14 days. Now, at the same time, English is the undisputedglobal language. Could there be a connection? Well I don't know. But I do knowthat I've seen a lot of changes. When I first came out to the Gulf, I came toKuwait in the days when it was still a hardship post. Actually, not that longago. That is a little bit too early. But nevertheless, I was recruited by theBritish Council along with about 25 other teachers. And we were the firstnon-Muslims to teach in the state schools there in Kuwait. We were brought toteach English because the government wanted to modernize the country andempower the citizens through education. And of course, the U.K. benefited fromsome of that lovely oil wealth.
Okay. Now this is the major change that I've seen -- how teachingEnglish has morphed from being a mutually beneficial practice to becoming amassive international business that it is today. No longer just a foreignlanguage on the school curriculum. And no longer the sole domain of motherEngland. It has become a bandwagon for every English-speaking nation on earth. And why not? After all, the best education -- according to the latest WorldUniversity Rankings -- is to be found in the universities of the U.K. and theU.S. So everybody wants to have an English education, naturally. But if you'renot a native speaker, you have to pass a test.
Now can it be right to reject a student on linguistic ability alone?Perhaps you have a computer scientist who's a genius. Would he need the samelanguage as a lawyer, for example? Well, I don't think so. We English teachersreject them all the time. We put a stop sign, and we stop them in their tracks. They can't pursue their dream any longer, till they get English. Now let me putit this way, if I met a monolingual Dutch speaker who had the cure for cancer, would I stop him from entering my British University? I don't think so. Butindeed, that is exactly what we do. We English teachers are the gatekeepers. And you have to satisfy us first that your English is good enough. Now it canbe dangerous to give too much power to a narrow segment of society. Maybe thebarrier would be too universal.
Okay. "But," I hear you say, "what about theresearch? It's all in English." So the books are in English, the journalsare done in English, but that is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It feeds theEnglish requirement. And so it goes on. I ask you, what happened totranslation? If you think about the Islamic Golden Age, there was lots oftranslation then. They translated from Latin and Greek into Arabic, intoPersian, and then it was translated on into the Germanic languages of Europeand the Romance languages. And so light shone upon the Dark Ages of Europe. Nowdon't get me wrong; I am not against teaching English, all you English teachersout there. I love it that we have a global language. We need one today morethan ever. But I am against using it as a barrier. Do we really want to end upwith 600 languages and the main one being English, or Chinese? We need morethan that. Where do we draw the line? This system equates intelligence with aknowledge of English which is quite arbitrary.
And I want to remind you that thegiants upon whose shoulders today's intelligentsia stand did not have to haveEnglish, they didn't have to pass an English test. Case in point, Einstein. He,by the way, was considered remedial at school because he was, in fact, dyslexic. But fortunately for the world, he did not have to pass an Englishtest. Because they didn't start until 1964 with TOEFL, the American test ofEnglish. Now it's exploded. There are lots and lots of tests of English. Andmillions and millions of students take these tests every year. Now you mightthink, you and me, those fees aren't bad, they're okay, but they areprohibitive to so many millions of poor people. So immediately, we're rejectingthem.
It brings to mind a headline I saw recently: "Education: TheGreat Divide." Now I get it, I understand why people would focus onEnglish. They want to give their children the best chance in life. And to dothat, they need a Western education. Because, of course, the best jobs go topeople out of the Western Universities, that I put on earlier. It's a circularthing.
Okay. Let me tell you a story about two scientists, two Englishscientists. They were doing an experiment to do with genetics and the forelimbsand the hind limbs of animals. But they couldn't get the results they wanted. They really didn't know what to do, until along came a German scientist whorealized that they were using two words for forelimb and hind limb, whereasgenetics does not differentiate and neither does German. So bingo, problemsolved. If you can't think a thought, you are stuck. But if another languagecan think that thought, then, by cooperating, we can achieve and learn so muchmore.
My daughter, came to England from Kuwait. She had studied scienceand mathematics in Arabic. It's an Arabic medium school. She had to translate itinto English at her grammar school. And she was the best in the class at thosesubjects. Which tells us that, when students come to us from abroad, we may notbe giving them enough credit for what they know, and they know it in their ownlanguage. When a language dies, we don't know what we lose with that language.
This is -- I don't know if you saw it on CNN recently -- they gavethe Heroes Award to a young Kenyan shepherd boy who couldn't study at night inhis village like all the village children, because the kerosene lamp, it hadsmoke and it damaged his eyes. And anyway, there was never enough kerosene, because what does a dollar a day buy for you? So he invented a cost-free solarlamp. And now the children in his village get the same grades at school as thechildren who have electricity at home. (Applause) When he received his award,he said these lovely words: "The children can lead Africa from what it istoday, a dark continent, to a light continent." A simple idea, but itcould have such far-reaching consequences.
當(dāng)他接受獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)時(shí),說了下面這句話:"這些孩子可以帶領(lǐng)非洲這塊黑暗大陸迎向光明"一個(gè)簡(jiǎn)單的想法,卻有著深遠(yuǎn)的影響! eople who have nolight, whether it's physical or metaphorical, cannot pass our exams, and we cannever know what they know. Let us not keep them and ourselves in the dark. Letus celebrate diversity. Mind your language. Use it to spread great ideas.

Dear:
Every child is the apple in their parents eyes. And every child is the hope of our country. Being the gethering place, campus’ security turns out to be very significant.
However, recently years campus security is being threatened. Some extremly people, who have suffered something bad will take revenge on the society. Because they think it’s the society fault to lead their disaster. And school is important to the society and the students are vulnerable groups, who don’t have too much ability to fight back. So they can easily success. In addition, some teachers’ quality may not good so that the students in school can’t get good education or affect their virtuous soul. What’s worse, some schools may occur the phenomenon of child abuse. There are also some coincidences will threat the campus safty.
It’s high time that we should take measures to keep a safe campus. First of all, the school should hire more responsible gate keeper and make specific rules to prevent the social people from coming into the campus. Secondly, when hiring new teachers, the school should not only consider the teachering skill but also the personal quality. The school also have to make some speech for students to increase their safe consciousness.
In general, campus security is very important that need all of us to make effort to achieve it. The measures mentioned above are just parts of keeping campus security. I hope people from all walks of life can give their hands to help the student grow healthly.
Has anyone asked you, what is your dream?
Childhood, when we still do not understand the meaning of the word, the mother told us that the dream is your dream to imagine the bold. It may not be realized, but it is your expectations of a good. Dream of life is the real meaning of life, dreams are the United States, so long since we became a dream come true beliefs.
You have, perhaps the hands of a dream is sugar, or to a small toy pistol. Because it can bring you happiness;
You have, perhaps the dream is for all 61 performances in dance, or in a particular contest winners. Because it can give you awards;
You have, perhaps the dream is a good report card, or a jealousy for all of the admission notice. Because it will bring you success.
Have had the dream, then the total variability, the total small hearts then let us boiling. If one day achieve my dream, I will know the feeling of happiness; if one day achieve my dream, I will know the feeling of reward; if one day achieve my dream, I will know the feeling of success. If, if, that is, if nothing else ... ...
Gulong once said: "never dream a dream, the difference between the two usually have a very from the worth thinking deeply." We desire a better life with all the imagination, dreams come from. However, the reality is because it has a very worthy of the same people thought the distance, it will be the driving force of our lives, because all the beautiful dreams, all our efforts to achieve. Who would not dream exist. Because there are too many reality of helplessness, so we will have 10,000 kinds of perfect vision. It is hard to say what is impossible, the dream of yesterday, it can be today's hope, and even can become tomorrow's reality. If I were to say the distance between dreams and reality, then please let us ask ourselves, our own life, what we really want? Today, we have long been out of immature, dream, is no longer a sugar, is the gun is performing is the award-winning. We have already gone through the darkness of three years, the dream is no longer a university admission notice. We have, dreams of the University of paradise, now, what we have in the dream? Is to study hard every day up to four years after the study section of the study to better schools? Or into the community has a good work to achieve the value of your life? Is traveling around the world to enjoy life, or fight the cause, accomplished? Think carefully, beautiful dream, virtually traction is no longer us, traction advance our efforts to live. Do not want to say that there is no dream we have the desire to survive. You are only alive, it will inevitably have their own dream. It no matter how vague, the total potential in our hearts so that we can never receive a tranquil state of mind until they become a reality. Dream and reality can be a total let us food for thought.
No one willing to ordinary life, but there is only one of Confucius, Mao Zedong is also only one of their big, big business, exceeding the limit of my dream, we can do is to have an unusual dream. We can not laugh a waste of people dream of recovery when the scientists, nor laughter of the small staff of the bank board the lunar dream, the dream of non-class, non-hierarchical, and the reality of the divide such as this can very well Xinghai, small than drains, no matter big Or Small , did not reach the other side of the end is not alone with the failure of the definition of life to pessimistic. Yu said that the cause of the pursuit of a person who can "dream" to do higher. Although the beginning of a dream, but as long as do non-stop, do not easily give up, dreams can come true. So, not to care about the distance between them how insurmountable, not to escape life, escapism, escape efforts. Asked me the distance between dreams and reality, I do not have a ruler to measure accurately, but would like to talk a out a true story. The hero is not my story, my story more than representative.

First of all, time is more precious than money. When money is spent, youcan earn it back if you like. However, when time is gone, it will never comeback again. To some extent, time is priceless.
Second, not all time can be turned into money in the end. Some persons areidling all the time. Their time is just for wasting, not for earning money. Theywill end in nothing at last.
Therefore, be sure to remember that time can be turned into money only withhard work involved in it.

About five year ago, iphone became very popular, most young people chased the trend, they would take every measure to buy a iphone,it was said that some teenagers bought their kidneys just for the purpose of buying a kidney,it is silly and unwise.
Today, iphone is still the most popular cellphone,it has becomes the symbol of richness and power, people are proud of owning an iphone. But every year, iphone will update,it means if people want to use the newest one, they must buy one iphone every year.
This cellphone is not cheap,it is even more expensive than the portable computer.People should be wise to this product, for most people, they don’t have the money to buy one every year, what’s more, they new one and the old one divers not so much.People can save the money to enjoy other things.

There is no doubt that the arts festival enriches our college life an extracurricular activity. However when it comes to what should be included in the arts festival different people have different views. Some insists on performing arts such as dances and dramas. Still others argue for the work of art like paintings and calligraphy. Personally I agree with the latter and I strongly recommend that photographic works should be counted as an important aspect of the arts festival.
My suggestion lies in the following two reasons. On the one hand for he students who take photos the photographic exhibition can stimulate them to discover the beauty that permeates our surroundings. As the saying goes beauty is in the eye of the beholder; such an activity will definitely foster sharp eyes of photographers to-be. On the other hand for the students who appreciate the photos they are given a shortcut to the beauty of the nature and the society. Maybe by this way they find the sense of the life and enjoy the life more in the future.
In short the photographic exhibition can get the students to discover and appreciate beauty. I believe that it is wise to involve the photographic works into the university arts festival.
