I am sure that, from this lectern, any number of distinguished spiritual leaders have ruminated on the lessons of the Ten Commandments. I don't have that kind of confidence, and, anyway, coveting your neighbor's ox or donkey is not the problem it used to be, so I thought I would use my few minutes today to make Ten Suggestions, or maybe just Ten Observations, about the world and your lives after Princeton. Please note, these points have nothing whatsoever to do with interest rates. My qualification for making such suggestions, or observations, besides having kindly been invited to speak today by President Tilghman, is the same as the reason that your obnoxious brother or sister got to go to bed later--I am older than you. Look what happened to me: A dozen years ago I was minding my own business teaching Economics 101 in Alexander Hall and trying to think of good excuses for avoiding faculty meetings. Then I got a phone call... In case you are skeptical of Forrest Gump's insight, here's a concrete suggestion for each of the graduating seniors. Take a few minutes the first chance you get and talk to an alum participating in his or her 25th, or 30th, or 40th reunion--you know, somebody who was near the front of the P-rade. Ask them, back when they were graduating 25, 30, or 40 years ago, where they expected to be today. If you can get them to open up, they will tell you that today they are happy and satisfied in various measures, or not, and their personal stories will be filled with highs and lows and in-betweens. But, I am willing to bet, those life stories will in almost all cases be quite different, in large and small ways, from what they expected when they started out. This is a good thing, not a bad thing; who wants to know the end of a story that's only in its early chapters? Your family and friends and your time at Princeton have given you a good start. What will you do with it? Will you keep learning and thinking hard and critically about the most important questions? Will you become an emotionally stronger person, more generous, more loving, more ethical? Will you involve yourself actively and constructively in the world? Many things will happen in your lives, pleasant and not so pleasant, but, paraphrasing a Woodrow Wilson School adage from the time I was here, "Wherever you go, there you are." 　　3. The concept of success leads me to consider so-called meritocracies and their implications. We have been taught that meritocratic institutions and societies are fair. Putting aside the reality that no system, including our own, is really entirely meritocratic, meritocracies may be fairer and more efficient than some alternatives. But fair in an absolute sense? Think about it. A meritocracy is a system in which the people who are the luckiest in their health and genetic endowment; luckiest in terms of family support, encouragement, and, probably, income; luckiest in their educational and career opportunities; and luckiest in so many other ways difficult to enumerate--these are the folks who reap the largest rewards. The only way for even a putative meritocracy to hope to pass ethical muster, to be considered fair, is if those who are the luckiest in all of those respects also have the greatest responsibility to work hard, to contribute to the betterment of the world, and to share their luck with others. As the Gospel of Luke says (and I am sure my rabbi will forgive me for quoting the New Testament in a good cause): "From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded" (Luke 12:48, New Revised Standard Version Bible). Those most worthy of admiration are those who have made the best use of their advantages or, alternatively, coped most courageously with their adversities. I think most of us would agree that people who have, say, little formal schooling but labor honestly and diligently to help feed, clothe, and educate their families are deserving of greater respect--and help, if necessary--than many people who are superficially more successful. 　　5. Since I have covered what I know about sociology, I might as well say something about political science as well. In regard to politics, I have always liked Lily Tomlin's line, in paraphrase: "I try to be cynical, but I just can't keep up." We all feel that way sometime. Actually, having been in Washington now for almost 11 years, as I mentioned, I feel that way quite a bit. Ultimately, though, cynicism is a poor substitute for critical thought and constructive action. Sure, interests and money and ideology all matter, as you learned in political science. But my experience is that most of our politicians and policymakers are trying to do the right thing, according to their own views and consciences, most of the time. If you think that the bad or indifferent results that too often come out of Washington are due to base motives and bad intentions, you are giving politicians and policymakers way too much credit for being effective. Honest error in the face of complex and possibly intractable problems is a far more important source of bad results than are bad motives. For these reasons, the greatest forces in Washington are ideas, and people prepared to act on those ideas. Public service isn't easy. Economics is a highly sophisticated field of thought that is superb at explaining to policymakers precisely why the choices they made in the past were wrong. About the future, not so much. However, careful economic analysis does have one important benefit, which is that it can help kill ideas that are completely logically inconsistent or wildly at variance with the data. 　　We know how fear feels, but I'm not sure we spend enough time thinking about what our fears mean.

　　As we grow up, we're often encouraged to think of fear as a weakness, just another childish thing to discard like baby teeth or roller skates.

　　And I think it's no accident that we think this way. Neuroscientists have actually shown that human beings are hard'wired to be optimists.

　　So maybe that's why we think of fear, sometimes, as a danger in and of itself. “Don't worry,” we like to say to one another. “Don't panic.” In English, fear is something we conquer. It's something we fight.

　　It's something we overcome. But what if we looked at fear in a fresh way? What if we thought of fear as an amazing act of the imagination, something that can be as profound and insightful as storytelling itself?

　　It's easiest to see this link between fear and the imagination in young children, whose fears are often extraordinarily vivid.

　　When I was a child, I lived in California, which is, you know, mostly a very nice place to live, but for me as a child, California could also be a little scary.

　　I remember how frightening it was to see the chandelier that hung above our dining table swing back and forth during every minor earthquake, and I sometimes couldn't sleep at night, terrified that the Big One might strike while we were sleeping.

　　PP： Okay， so no surprises， people are onto us。 They wonder what that bowl of pretzels is doing there in the first place。 One even asks， like you just saw， is that bowl of pretzels there as a trick？ And yet， despite that， the power of the situation seems to inevitably dominate， and those rich players start to eat more pretzels。

　　Rich Player： I love pretzels。

　　PP： And as the game went on， one of the really interesting and dramatic patterns that we observed begin to emerge was that the rich players actually started to become ruder toward the other person， less and less sensitive to the plight of those poor， poor players， and more and more demonstrative of their material success， more likely to showcase how well they're doing。 Rich Player： I have money for everything。 Poor Player： How much is that？ Rich Player： You owe me 24 dollars。 You're going to lose all your money soon。 I'll buy it。 I have so much money。 I have so much money， it takes me forever。 Rich Player 2： I'm going to buy out this whole board。 Rich Player 3： You're going to run out of money soon。 I'm pretty much untouchable at this point。

　　PP： Okay， and here's what I think was really， really interesting， is that at the end of the 15 minutes， we asked the players to talk about their experience during the game。 And when the rich players talked about why they had inevitably won in this rigged game of Monopoly —— （Laughter） — they talked about what they'd done to buy those different properties and earn their success in the game， and they became far less attuned to all those different features of the situation， including that flip of a coin that had randomly gotten them into that privileged position in the first place。 And that's a really， really incredible insight into how the mind makes sense of advantage。

　　Now this game of Monopoly can be used as a metaphor for understanding society and its hierarchical structure， wherein some people have a lot of wealth and a lot of status， and a lot of people don't。 They have a lot less wealth and a lot less status and a lot less access to valued resources。 And what my colleagues and I for the last seven years have been doing is studying the effects of these kinds of hierarchies。 What we've been finding across dozens of studies and thousands of participants across this country is that as a person's levels of wealth increase， their feelings of compassion and empathy go down， and their feelings of entitlement， of deservingness， and their ideology of self—interest increases。 In surveys， we found that it's actually wealthier individuals who are more likely to moralize greed being good， and that the pursuit of self—interest is favorable and moral。 Now what I want to do today is talk about some of the implications of this ideology self—interest， talk about why we should care about those implications， and end with what might be done。

　　So,first of all,i’d like to show you the current situation of energy using. energy conservation and emission reduction means to save energy and reduce harmful gas emission. with the development of science and technology, our life has become more and more colorful. however, it is also associated with huge energy consumption.

　　Here is a picture, it shows that with the continuous development of human society, our consumption of energy is more and more huge. as we know, nowadays, our main source of energy is non-renewable resource. its storage capacity is very limited, and most of them have been used , and still being consumed very quickly .

　　Here is a bar chart , from which we can be aware of the importance and urgency of energy saving in addition, there are some picture about the greenhouse effect. because a large amount of greenhouse gas emission, global temperatures are rising .it give cause to the rise of sea level ,and natural disasters is frequent…..

　　Now,let’s turn to the second part,why is energy saving so important?in order to let the world be still beautiful, we need to do something .for one thing, energy conservation and emission reduction will slow down the energy consumption, and save the resources; for another, we are also protecting the environment at the same time,it can reduce greenhouse gas and other harmful gas emission. according to the survey, in our country, coal accounted for 80% of total electricity, but coal will produce large amounts of greenhouse gases.

　　So,the most important part is coming,in our daily life,how can we save energy? there are many ways, such as: turn off the lights when you needn’t, drive less and walk more , save pa-pe-r, plant more trees.

　　when i was a naughty boy, may be because of the influence of the film.xiao bing zhang ga,my dream was to be a soldier just like zhang ga.i thought if i was a soldier, i should be able to swim, dive and climb trees as he did.it seemed to be very wonderful.so i began to learn swimming, diving and climbing trees.i practiced every day and finally i could do them well.but when i entered junior high school and had the military training.i suddenly found that being a soldier was very difficult and i wasnt strong enough to bear it .i had to give my dream up.

　　but i wasnt discouraged, and i had new aim, which was to be a postman, or rather to be a newspaper boy.as a newspaper boy.i could speed along streets on a bike and throw newspapers onto every porch.thats also very cool.so i started learning to ride a bicycle.after the everyday practice, i could go very fast by bicycle.but to my disappointment, the job which i wanted only existed in western counties not in china, because there was no porch in china.and chinese postmen had to stuff very thick newspapers into very small mailboxes from very narrow entrances.the job was far from what i had expected.so once again my dream fell through.

　　perhaps you have had the same experience as i and most of your dreams havent come true yet.but i think it doesnt matter, because if you have a dream, youll make many efforts to realize it.this course is really important.if i hadnt dreamt of being a soldier or a newspaper boy.i wouldnt have learned to swim, to dive, to climb trees or to ride a bicycle.even if our dream cant come true, youll learn much from the efforts you have made.so what i want to tell us is that dream helps us to grow up and teaches us how to control our lives .it is dream that gives us power and makes our lives colorful
