Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

  Melody of Youth

  Ladies and gentlemen:

Good morning! I am very glad to stand here and share the topic of “youth” with you. I come from and my name is maxfu. Today my topic is “Melody of Youth”.

Some people say that youth is a rising sun, carries infinite hope and irradiates dazzling light.

Some people say that youth is a ball of blaze, flickers the flame of passion, dances the melody of youth.

Some people say that youth is a roaring river, bursts out the voice of confidence, flows the boldness of youth.

Some people say that youth is a fresh willow, has not only the endless tenderness, but also the iron will.

It’s true. Youth is ought to be a life with great persistence, which is full of hope, enthusiasm, assurance, belief and keep striving during all your life.

Since we know how wonderful the youth is, how can we build our own youth wonderful?

Firstly, I think you should set an ambition. Sam Walton has told us: High expectation is the key to everything. Ideals are the navigation mark and ambitions are the power for our striving.

Secondly, I think you should think more. Look before you leap, we are impetuous, if we consider everything calmly; there’s nothing that we can not do successfully.

Thirdly, I think you should work hard. An idle youth, a needy age. When we are young we are supposed to struggle, to do everything by ourselves so that we can get more experience for our future. As it’s said the beautiful rainbow always appears after a ding-on and the wealthy harvest always comes from laborious tillage.

Lastly, I think you should have a mood of optimism. Being positive, when we meet the frustration, can help us learn how to he stronger. Cause we are young, there’s no fail if only we try it again. Don’t get dizzy with success, and don’t get upset with failure.

By the way, being in youth doesn’t only mean you are young at your age. Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind. When the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80.

Youth is a painting, which engraves by magnificent and wonderful color. Youth is a song, which resounds with brightness and sweetness. When we are provided with passion and calm consideration, clinging goals and keep striving during all of our life. We can sooner or later have a perfect youth, a regretless youth, and make our melody of youth more and more wonderful!

  That’s all. Thank you!

Is being young better than being old? Depending on what it means to be young, and what it means to be old, the answer will vary. But assuming we are talking in general, my answer is yes. When a person gets older, he loses his motivation to be active in society, explore more, and experience things he has not experienced before. This is why being young is better than being old. Young people are motivated to be successful in their lives, faced with less complicated problems, and have more opportunities to become who they want to be than when they are older.

This year, there are many movies about in honor of people’s fading youth, the movies are very popular by the audience. Suddenly the topic about youthbecomes a hot topic, many people collect the symbol things which stand for theiryouth, they are remembering their youth. For the young, they you enjoying thebeautiful lifetime, while for the old, they are just recalling it. On myopinion, youth is nothing to do with the age, we can enjoy the youth all thetime. The movies recall people’s memory, if people are active, they can be youngforever, there is no need to look back on the memory. When people get older, they can live as the young, they don’t have to be act as the old, people get oldwhen they think they are old. There is a famous song Forever Young, it remindspeople to keep young at heart.

Someone said "we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of abook, whose pages are infinite". I don’t know who wrote these words, but I’vealways liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it tobe. We are all in the position of the farmers. If we plant a good seed ,we reapa good harvest. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

We are young. "How to spend the youth?" It is a meaningful question. Toanswer it, first I have to ask "what do you understand by the word youth?" Youthis not a time of life, it’s a state of mind. It’s not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees. It’s the matter of the will. It’s the freshness of thedeep spring of life.

A poet said "To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wildflower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. Severaldays ago, I had a chance to listen to a lecture. I learnt a lot there. I’d liketo share it with all of you. Let’s show our right palms. We can see three linesthat show how our love.career and life is. I have a short line of life. Whatabout yours? I wondered whether we could see our future in this way. Well, let’smake a fist. Where is our future? Where is our love, career, and life? Tellme.Yeah, it is in our hands. It is held in ourselves.

We all want the future to be better than the past. But the future can gobetter itself. Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. From thepast, we’ve learnt that the life is tough, but we are tougher. We’ve learnt thatwe can’t choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it. Failure doesn’tmean you don’t have it, it does mean you should do it in a different way.Failure doesn’t mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder.

As what I said at the beginning, "we are reading the first verse of thefirst chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite". The past has gone. Nothingwe do will change it. But the future is in front of us. Believe that what wegive to the world, the world will give to us. And from today on, let’s be theowners of ourselves, and speak out "We are the world, we are the future."

As you slowly open your eyes, look around, notice where the light comes into your room; listen carefully, see if there are new sounds you can recognize; feel with your body and spirit, and see if you can sense the freshness in the air.

Yes,yes, yes,it's a new day,it's a different day,and it's a bright day!And most importantly,it's a new beginning for your life,a beginning where you are going to make new decisions, take new actions, make new friends, and take your life to a totally unprecedented level.

In your mind's eye,you can see clearly the things you want to have, the paces you intend to go,the relationships you desire to develop, and the positions you aspire to reach.

You can hear your laughter of joy and happiness on the day when everything happens as you dream. You can see the smiles on the people around you when the magic moment strikes. You can feel your face is getting red, your heart is beating fast, and your blood is rushing all over your body,to every single corner of your being!

You know all this is real as long as you are confident, passionate and committed! And you are confident, you are passionate, you are committed!

You will no longer fear making new sounds, showing new facial expressions, using your body in new ways, approaching new people, and asking new questions.

You will live every single day of your life with absolute passion, and you will show your passion through the words you speak and the actions you take.

You will focus all your time and effort on the most important goals of your life. You will never succumb to challenges of hardships.

You will never waver in your pursuit of excellence. After all,you are the best, and you deserve the best!

As your coach and friend,I can assure you the door to all the best things in the world will open to you,but the key to that door is in your hand. You must do your part. You must faithfully follow the plans you make and take the actions you plan; you must never quit and you must never fear.I know you must do it,you can do it,you will do it,and you will succeed! Now stand firm and tall, make a fist, get excited, and yell it out:

I must do it!I can do it!I will do it!I will succeed!

thirty college students across the country attended the tenth 21st centurycup national english speaking contest in beijing on april 10. eventually, xiapeng, from nanjing university was named the champion. the second and thirdplaces went to zhang jing, a sophomore from china foreign affairs university, and zhang a xu, from hong kong polytechnic university, respectively. more than1000 college students in beijing are lucky birds to listen to the speeches onthe spot in friendship hotel.

just make to it the finals, they had to get past 60 others speaking on “theimpact of globalization on traditional chinese values”. that was at thesemi-final on april 8-9. what will chinese college students think about theimpact? each contestant had his own take on the subject. xia summed upglobalization by saying: “it’s just controversial and hard to say whether it isgood or bad.” xia took the old wall of his city, nanjing, as a metaphor. hespoke about the conflict over whether to protect the old walls or tear them downto represent the conflict of ideas. he suggested that people protect the wall asa valuable relic while tearing down the “intangible walls” of their minds thatprevent communication. while some other students are more focusing on the impactof globalization on family relations, attitudes towards love, andjob-hunting.

over the past 10 years, the national english speaking competition has givencontestants a chance to speak on a variety of topics closely related to theirlives. chinese students become more open-minded and receive various ideas andthinking over the decade. diversity becomes more obvious on campus, studentshave more opportunities to express and show themselves. it’s not an easy taskfor the contestants to win through the fierce competition. owning to theirpassion, hard work and persistence, they finally succeeded in the contest.

liu xin, the first champion of the national contest, is now an anchorpersonof cctv-9. recalling the passion of study on campus, she said: “when you want toexpress your idea by a foreign language without finding a right way, you’rereally upset. then you have to encourage yourself, and after a long term ofbitterness, suddenly you find you get the right way with joy.” with the championtitle in 21st century cup, liu attended the international public speakingcompetition in london in may 1996 afterward and got the first prizehistorically.the winner in __ surprised the audience, since she came fromaccounting major instead of english major. gu qiubei, then 22 years old, was asenior in shanghai foreign studies university. while being asked whether she hadsome good methods to learn english, she said: “l(fā)earn english with passion andenthusiasm.” attracted by the greatness of english language, gu even changed hermajor from accounting to english in her postgraduate study. the most importantissue in english learning process she pointed out is personal interests. onlypeople interested in english benefit a lot from the learning methods and thosewith passion will finally achieve their dreams.

when chief of global media giant viacom sumner redstone gave a speech intsinghua university on his autobiography a passion to win, he was asked whatmade him to restart his career at the age of 60, the 81-year-old media tycoonsaid: “firstly, there’s a self-driving force in my deep heart, which keeps mypassion to succeed and surpass others; secondly, i don’t think i’m too old toleave work, actually i love my work very much.”

some of the contestants have achieved their dreams as redstone; stillothers are on the way to their dream. with a passion to win, you will overcomeobstacles and succeed at the end.

i’m studying in a city that’s famous for its walls. people who visit mycity are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, especially when silhouettedagainst the setting sun with gold, shining streaks. the old, cracked bricks arecovered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still forcenturies.

our ancestors liked to build walls. they built walls in beijing, xi’an,nanjing and many other cities, and they built the great wall, which snakesacross half our country. they built walls to protect against enemies and evilspirits. this tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks andschools walled off from the public.

for a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world tome.

my perceptions, however, changed after i made a hiking trip to the easternsuburbs of my city. my classmates and i were walking with some foreign students.as we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, whichformed a wide canopy above our heads. suddenly one foreign student asked me,“where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?”

“we’re already in the eastern suburbs,” i replied. he seemed taken aback,“i thought you chinese had walls for everything.” his remark set off a heateddebate. at one point, he likened our walled cities to “jails”, while i insistedthat the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in china that had nowalls.that debate had no winners, but i did learn a lot from this student. forinstance, he told me that some major universities like oxford and cambridge werenot surrounded by walls. i have to admit that we do have many walls in china, and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whetherthey are physical or intangible. we will keep some walls but tear down thosethat impede our development.

  let me give another example.

a year ago, when i was working on a term paper, i needed a book on businesslaw and found a copy in the law school library. however, the librarian coldlyrejected my request to borrow it, saying, “you can’t borrow this book, you’renot a student here.” in the end, i had to spend 200 yuan to buy a copy.meanwhile, the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf.

at the beginning of this semester, i heard that my university had startedto think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at otheruniversities, so my experience wouldn’t be repeated. barriers would be replacedby bridges. an inter-library loan system would give us access to books from anylibrary. with globalization and china integrated into the world, i believe manyof these intangible walls will be knocked down.

i know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to saywhether it is good or bad. but one thing is for sure: it draws our attention tochina’s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to examine their role in themodern world.

and how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities? should we tearthem down? definitely not. my city, like beijing and other cities, is actuallymaking a great effort to preserve the walls. these walls attract historians, archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history andcultural heritage. walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of theworld. if the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they wouldbe proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls. they are nowbridges that link east and west, south and north, and all countries of theworld. our cultural heritage will survive globalization.

  That’s all. Thank you!

Let's take steps to banish some of the most common negative thoughts manyof us repeat to ourselves. Being in a negative space is harmful to our overallwell-being, because what you dwell on can easily become self fulfilling if youdon't change your mindset.

  1.I'm not good enough.

This type of negative thought that can apply to many categories. Maybe youdon't think you're a good enough mother or good at a sport. Even if you findyourself lacking in something, there's no need to keep repeating it to yourself. The human brain is an incredible thing. Be inspired by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor,Harvard-trained neuroscientist who suffered a stroke that left her unable towalk, read, write, talk, or remember her previous life. Dr. Taylor took eightyears to recover and has since then written a best-selling book about herexperience and appeared on Oprah. Keep on working toward something, and watchthe leaps and bounds you'll make.

  2.No one cares about me.

To accurately say that your family and friends don't care about you wouldbe a very rare situation. Maybe you're being too negative and overlooking thegestures of love they show you. They don't even have to be big gestures, butit's the little things they do for you that count. And people may be reacting tothe energy you're putting out; perhaps you think they don't care about you soyou don't make any effort in your relationships. Start showing people you care,so they can show you back in kind. And if you don't have good relationships withthe people you know, what's stopping you from making new friends?

  3.I really dislike this person.

If you dislike a person in your work or personal life, focusing on her badqualities is not going to make things better. You need to let go of yourassumptions about her and know that she is human too, which means she makesmistakes. Either you move on and stop thinking and talking about her, or learnto approach her or think about her in a positive manner. Focus on her goodqualities, and repeat them to yourself instead of honing in on the unpleasantthings.

  4.Why is she better off?

Comparing yourself to someone else is never productive or positive. There'salways going to be someone who is younger, prettier, smarter, or richer thanyou. If you keep coveting what someone else has, then this may cause you to beresentful of them, which will open a whole other negative can of worms.Remember, what they don't have is your whole package. Be appreciative of whatyou have, because if you want to play the comparison game, remember that thereare people who are also worse off than you are.

  5.I'll never reach my goal.

If you think you're not going to be able "get there," think again. Thereare many people who are worse off and have overcome bigger obstacles than whatyou are facing. Take, for example, Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, an amputeewho overcame his handicap to compete in the Olympics against his able-bodiedpeers. Everything is within your reach as long as you work hard and have a apositive attitude.

  teachers, dear classmates:

  Everybody is good!

The title of my speech is "the hardness of life"

The desert, a tree stand up, show an image of a monument.

Castle peak, tree stood up, together is a grand Great Wall.

The long river, all the trees stood up, compose into a dragon's glory.

We are a symbol of the too much, and deducing the too much. But I believe that my image, is by no means "like a hand if soft Ti, skin coagulate fat," Lin daiyu, also is not the unkempt appearance ", ragged "modern" Sue a beggar ". We as a symbol of hope and vitality. So we show in front of others should be clothes without pleats, face no scale between the gestures, polite gentleman with a heroic spirit, full of vigor and vitality of the modern image of new youth, an integrated into the embodiment of the spirit of nature.

Someone once said, life is a kind of hardness, integrity and dignity are propping up the bones of the hardness of life. , is "better to die when life is a disgrace", "not the kui on day, open and aboveboard and feel no qualms over to the ground", this is has always been China's traditional virtue. Li bai's "Ann can bow and scrape, make me not happy yan" an atmosphere verse will again let those people who have no self-respect shame? Loss of self-esteem is the man who is a good for nothing, and we as the vanguard of The Times, if always indulge in the dark, or to do a pierced my hero, a blooming flower in the wind and rain in the steel roses. The answer, is self-evident.

Again desolate desert there is also a monument stands, castle peak and spotless, also has the Great Wall, the water calm again, there is also a dragon lying. And time again how, our image and our glory remains the same. Because of our pride, because we have confidence, because we have a fresh life. And because of this, the bank is leisurely, just the vast desert, castle peak to evergreen, the hardness of life forever.
