As a natural result of insufficient English speaking environment, my speaking and listening abilities were not developed satisfactorily, although my reading and writing abilities were quite all right. I remember my experience during a summer vacation when I made plans to watch 10 original English movies (I mean those not dubbed.) including the classic Casablanca, Rebecca, A Tale of Two Cities, and Little Women.
Ipersistently carried out my plan and each of the films I watched a dozen times until I could recite most of the dialogues. At the end of that summer vacation, I found I became nearly as fluent as a native English speaker.
The Ways of Reading(讀書(shū)之法)
We may obtain knowledge by reading. The more books we read, the more we accumulate the knowledge. Is it right? I don’t think so. It’s not wide reading but useful reading that leads to excellence. And only good books can benefit us.
So choosing books is very important for reading. Many students spend a lot of time reading legends and swordsman novels. It’s a waste of time. Some students even read some bad books and it is harmful for them.
So be as careful of the books we read, as of the company we keep, for our habit and character will be as much influenced by the former as by the latter.

I have read some books this term。 The one which impressed me most is 。 Ibrought this book last term。The book consists of three versions: French， Chineseand English。 I read Chinese version first， which made my second read in Englishmuch easier。 I’m not going to talk about the fairy tale’s writing skills，writing style and what philosophy it contains。 Instead， I will pick out severalsentences which moved me a lot and then show my feeling。
In part 4， there is “Not everyone has had a friend�！� And later， in part 17，there’s “It’s also lonely with people�！� The two sentences nearly have the samemeaning。 A true friend is of a lifetime。 You may say that: “I have a lot offriends， and we always play together and chat together……” But in fact， friendsare not those whom you always stay with。 Friends can be away from your dailylife， can be out of connection for a long time， but they understand what you doand what you say all the time。 You never feel embarrassed when you stay withyour friends and even say no words。
In part 8， the little prince: “He had taken seriously certaininconsequential remarks and had grown very unhappy�！� It’s the same to us。 We aretoo concerned about what others say to do what we really want to。 Nowadays， weseems to care more about other people than ourselves。 When you have bought adress you thought was beautiful， someone says that: “ Oh， it is not suitable foryou�！� Guess what， you will not wear the dress any more even if it is new。
In part 18， the flower had seen a caravan passing: “The wind blows themaway。 They have no roots， which hampers them a good deal�！� The sentence seemsridiculous， however， makes me think a lot。 For human being， roots mean spiritbelief。 There’s someone saying that: “One nation won’t be destroyed as long asit has belief�！� Here， I want to mention Jewry。 No matter how much hardship itwent through， it never give up its struggling。 I have seen a photo: an oldJewish woman holds a book and reads it seriously even though she is in the ruinafter one battle。 I admire this nation， and at the same time， I worry about ournation。 Maybe it has belief which I don’t notice。 It couldn’t be denied that weare being more and more fickle and materialistic。 We are losing our spiritualbelief gradually。 Read more and search for one spiritual holy land。
In part 21， the fox tells the little prince : “It’s the time you spent onyour rose that makes you rose so important�！� I love this sentence most。 I thinkof people’s dream。 Perhaps in others’ eyes， our dreams are insignificant。 Theyalways discourage us。 But what we should know is that only if you devote to yourdream， your dream id unique。 You yourself is the master of your dream。
At last， I want to take the author’s word as the ending: All grown-ups werechildren first (But few of them remember it)。 If only we all remember it。

Knowledge can be acquired from many sources. These include books, teachersand practical experience, and each has its own advantages. The knowledge we gainfrom books and formal education enables us to learn about things that we have noopportunity to experience in daily life. We can study all the places in theworld and learn from people we will never meet in our lifetime, just by readingabout them in books. We can also develop our analytical skills and learn how toview and interpret the world around us in different ways. Furthermore, we canlearn from the past by reading books. In this way, we won't repeat the mistakesof others and can build on their achievements.
Practical experience, on the other hand, can give us more useful knowledge.It is said that one learns best by doing, and I believe that this is true,whether one is successful or not. In fact, I think making mistakes is the bestway to learn. Moreover, if one wants to make new advances, it is necessary toact. Innovations do not come about through reading but through experimentation.Finally, one can apply the skills and insights gained through the study of booksto practical experience, making an already meaningful experience moremeaningful. However, unless it is applied to real experiences, book knowledgeremains theoretical and, in the end, is useless. That is why I believe thatknowledge gained from practical experience is more important than that acquiredfrom books.
