Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is the most important festivity for the Chinese people. It is also called the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year.
Every year has an animal’s name. These animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. A Chinese legend says that these twelve animals had a race. The first year was named after the rat, the winner. The other eleven years were named after the order in which the animals arrived in the race. The clever rat jumped onto the ox’s back then at the end jumped over the ox’s head to arrive first!
The Chinese believe that a person born in a particular year has some of the characteristics of animal.
On Chinese New Year’s Eve all family members enjoy a big, delicious meal. It is very important for the Chinese to be with their families on this occasion. Fish is always part of the dinner because it represents abundance.
On New Year’s Day all Chinese children wear new clothes with bright colors. Red is considered a lucky color. Parents and relatives give children the traditional New Year’s gift called lucky money. This money is put into bright red and gold envelopes. Fill under the pillow. in the morning of new year , the kid wakes up to see the “lucky money”, exprethat oneself become one year older. Red is a traditional color for festivals, celebrations, weddings and birthdays.
The lion dancers are always part of the festivities. The lion has a big head and long body made of cloth. The lion dance is accompanied by drums, cymbals and noisy firecrackers. According to ancient traditions the great noise frightens away evil spirits.

good morning everybody. my name is stephen. i am honoured to be standing here in front of you all.
i have been living in nanjing for 5 years. i have worked at many different schools and taught many students of many ages. but standing here in front of you in dong shan foreign language school (dong shan wai guo yu xue xiao) i feel like i am part of a big family. as a foreigner i love my life living in china and i love travelling. i have travelled to many countries. but china is my home. my mother and father visited me and my brother now lives in hangzhou. i like living in china as every single day is interesting and like a small adventure. i do love living in china but sometimes i miss my family and best friends in england.
but working at dong wai is a very important experience for me. i feel like part of a big family. all of you are part of this special family. not all schools have this atmosphere. sometimes in life we get tired and feel we work too much. but your school years are very important years. some of the most important years of your life. you can make many friends. and some friends will be more like family to you and maybe some teachers too. you work hard but you are studying and learning. all of the students here are part of the future. some of you may go to study abroad. many of you will stay in china. but one day we will all go to different places. but our lives are these moments we are living right now. right here and now.
so everybody in dong wai. my message is this: do not regret the past or worry about the future, but live for today.
i do not cut my life up into days but my days into lives: each day, each hour, an entire life..
so i wish you all have good health in 20xx as good health helps you to live a good life. remember to rest well when you can. and this will help you to study well and keep a clear mind.

every school has its own set of rules to keep students disciplined. the rules change from one school to another. some schools are much stricter than others. there are also some rules that look strange or funny to us. here are some funny school rules:
tough japanese rules
most schools demand that students wear uniforms, such as sports suits or skirts. but many japanese schools even regulate the color of underwear! they also demand that girls’ white socks be folded in a certain way and boys’ heads be shaved.
other japanese schools tell students that they may not date, go to movies, leave homed after sunset or play video games without permission from the school.
different shoes in us
for safety at some us schools, students must have a pair of indoor shoes to change into at school every day. this makes sure students won’t fall over on the slippery floors and keeps the schools clean.
gum chewing is not allowed in many us school buildings, as it is difficult to clean up. and i f students chew gum in class, they may not focus on their study.
no strange hair in uk
strange hairstyles are not allowed in some british schools. but they might allow students to wear certain hairstyles during the world cup years. two students had a special design shaved into their hair during 20xx world cup. but they were not accepted by their school after that because the school said the rules changed since then.

They consider it unlucky if the barrel of rice is empty, because they think they will have nothing to eat in the next year. Taking medicine is forbidden on this day, otherwise, people will have sick for the whole year and take medicine constantly.

Maybe there will be some regrets, but we will take these regrets as our valuable experience and wealth in life, because we believe that we will do better!
The year starts again and everything is renewed. We are one year older. We are no longer naughty children who don't understand the world. The cultivation of teachers and the watering of knowledge have enabled us to have our own thoughts and lofty ideals. In this promising new year, we will work hard to live up to the instructions of teachers and parents, and live up to this beautiful era. Even if we fall down, we will get up again and never lose heart. We are like bright flowers, which will bloom more brightly in the new year. Looking back on the relentless passage of years and looking forward to the long road ahead, how can one not seriously think about the past years and explore the true meaning of life?
