"You are what you eat." Nutrition experts often use this saying to promotebetter eating habits. What we put in our mouths does become a part of us. But wecan look at this statement another way. What we eat reflects who we are--aspeople and as a culture. Do you want to understand another culture? Then youought to find out about its food. Learning about American food can give us areal taste of American culture.

What is "American food"? At first you might think the answer is easy aspie. To many people, American food means hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken andpizza. If you have a "sweet tooth," you might even think of apple pie orchocolate chip cookies. It's true that Americans do eat those things. But arethose the only kind of vittles you can find in America?

Except for Thanksgiving turkey, it's hard to find a typically "American"food. The United States is a land of immigrants. So Americans eat food from manydifferent countries. When people move to America, they bring their cookingstyles with them. That's why you can find almost every kind of ethnic food inAmerica. In some cases, Americans have adopted foods from other countries asfavorites. Americans love Italian pizza, Mexican tacos and Chinese egg rolls. But the American version doesn't taste quite like the original!

As with any large country, the U.S.A has several distinct regions. Eachregion boasts its own special style of food. Visit the South and enjoycountry-style cooking. Journey through Louisiana for some spicy Cajun cuisine.Take a trip to New England and sample savory seafood dishes. Travel through theMidwest, "the breadbasket of the nation," for delicious baked goods. Cruise overto the Southwest and try some tasty Tex-Mex treats. Finish your food tour in thePacific Northwest with some gourmet coffee.

Americans living at a fast pace often just "grab a quick bite." Fast foodrestaurants offer people on the run everything from fried chicken to fried rice.Microwave dinners and instant foods make cooking at home a snap. Of course, oneof the most common quick American meals is a sandwich. If it can fit between twoslices of bread, Americans probably make a sandwich out of it. Peanut butter andjelly is an all-time American favorite.

Americans on the go also tend to eat a lot of "junk food." Potato chips, candy bars, soft drinks and other goodies are popular treats. Many people eattoo many of these unhealthy snacks. But others opt for more healthy eatinghabits. Some even go "all natural." They refuse to eat any food prepared withchemicals or additives.

American culture is a good illustration of the saying "you are what youeat." Americans represent a wide range of backgrounds and ways of thinking. Thevariety of foods enjoyed in the U.S. reflects the diversity of personal tastes. The food may be international or regional. Sometimes it's fast, and sometimesit's not so fast. It might be junk food, or maybe it's natural food. In anycase, the style is all-American.

Food between China and Western countries are totally different styles.China has 5000 years history. We probably spend half of time on food. Chinesepeople choice food very carefully. They only use fresh material to make food. For example they only eat fresh fish. Chinese have a lot of ideas and techniquesfor cooking. We can cook a chicken in over ten ways. That’s why Chinese food isso popular in the world. Western country like English or American, they don’thave fresh food because they buy their food from supermarket which only sellsstored materials. Western people would also prefer fast food like burgers andchips. They are unhealthy to human body. Western people do not have many skillsfor cooking, mostly they only boil, steam and bake the food. By the way, westernpeople are very good at making desert and chocolate. They can make very goodcake and chocolate. They are very sweet but it’s sort of food which make youbecome fat quickly.

In china if you invite people for meal, the person who invited other peoplewould pay for the meal but it’s not the way in Western country. In westerncountry people will think you only invited me but it’s not your responsibilityto pay for me. I can afford it. They won’t be happy if you pay for them. Peoplein China would always put dishes into customer’s plate to show theirhospitality, but they will think it’s not healthy because your chopsticks havebeen used by you. In western country like America not England, people willalways give tips to waiter after they finished meal in a restaurant. If youdon’t they will not be happy because tips are one of their major income. Inchina this only happen in some top restaurants and hotels in large internationalcities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Western people will also think youare rude if you make sound during the meal. Western people do not hold theirbowl up even when they have a bowl of soup.

There is also a huge difference between Chinese and Western people. Chinesepeople use chopsticks and western people use fork and knife. Usually people whouse fork and knife will use fork to hold the meat and cut it by knife and usefork to help to get that piece of meat into mouse. Chinese just use chopstick topick things and pass it into your mouse.

Chinese people only have three meals during a day. But western people willhave more, they have afternoon tea. Usually they would have fruits, homemadecake, tea (black tea) or biscuit with cheese. If you are a housewife and have alot of time, you may have morning tea as well.

"mum, it is my friend's birthday tomorrow, i must buy her a present."

"mum, this jacket was out of fashion long ago, would you do me a favor? "

take. take. take. the relationship between a mother and a child always seems to follow such a pattern. i know my mother is always there for me, providing me with everything i need; from food to clothing, from tuition to pocket money. i never thought twice about all she did until one day she said, "will there be a time that you'll say you have taken enough from me? like a child endlessly asking, we humans, throughout history, have been continually demanding what we desire from nature. we enjoy the comfort and beauty of our furniture, yet we never bother to think about the serious soil erosion caused by deforestation. we take it for granted that we must warm ourselves in winter times, yet we seldom realize the burning away of precious natural resources. we appreciate all the prosperity from the development of modern industry, yet few would give the slightest consideration to the global air and water pollution caused by industrial wastes. our ruthless exploitation has permanently impaired our mother earth. as we tragically learned from last summer's floods. we cannot continue our carelessness.

finally, standing here at the threshold of the 21st century, we cannot help thinking of our posterity. nature is not only the mother of the present generation, but also the mother of the generations to come. how severely our descendents will criticize us if we leave them a barren and lifeless mother? how much more they will appreciate us if we give them a world of harmony to inherit? let us start respecting and caring for nature from now on. let us start the campaign of.

Technology is power, which is not proportionally distributed among creature. Human beings and other species belong to distinctively varied categories since men grasp the strength of technology. The people with great power, driven by their greedy instinct, can easily build their prosperity upon others species' or other human-beings' suffering and torment. With high-technology, people hunt and kill cetaceans in extremely high efficiency for extra food. Developed countries build polluting factories in Third World countries and earn the profits thousand miles away. They invade small countries for hypocritical reasons just to exploit its natural resources. Science and technology have turned this world into a dog-eat-dog wild jungle. What's worse, we barely feel guilty about the conducted evils because what we have to do is to push buttons and machines are our accomplices.

However, it is humanism that stops us from becoming complete animals. Humanism made us realize the significance of living in a harmonious world and turn our spotlight on building eco-friendly industry. In the past years, we stopped killing animals for nutrition we don't need. We passed laws and regulations to protect the least-advantaged people. Because of humanism, we started to consider human beings and nature as a whole and care more than just ourselves. We filled ourselves with reason, love and compassion. Humanism keeps reminding us the consequence of abusing the immense power of technology and the great responsibility we undertake.

As human, we are deeply conscious of our common humanity. There is no way we can walk away without being tortured by our conscience after we did so many damages on nature or other forms of life. Therefore, we modify our behavior to what we think it's humane. In this way, we gradually achieve the ultimate harmony between human and nature.

In fact, humanism has done much more than just making our conscience clear. It actually saves us from destroying our planet. We all know that we can't upset the balance of nature without a price although sometimes people choose to neglect the consequences and give in to the desire of fortune. Silent Spring, a very famous book written by Rachel Carson, revealed the fact that DDT and such chemical products could be very lethal to creatures like birds, and therefore they caused irreversible damage to our eco-system. The manufacturers knew exactly about the side effects but they chose to conceal the fact for their own interests. Without the humanists like Rachel Carson, we will remain ignorant and eventualy face our own doom desperately.

The role of humanism is absolutely indispensable. It gives us a unique opportunity to be wise and act in ways that elevate us above the animal kingdom. It retains our humanness. It prevents the world from being destroyed because of our destructive instinct. So ladies and gentlemen, let passion fill your sails, but let humanism be your rudder.

on my birthday two years ago, many special things happened on me. and i would

  remember them forever.

that morning, i rode my bike to school happily as usual. on my way to the

classroom, i saw some of my classmates. but when they saw me, they rushed away. that made me confused. because they would talk to me or play jokes on me before. but it was strange today.

when i came into the classroom, i found the atmosphere was quite strange.

everybody looked at me and laughed loudly. suddenly they all said in good order,“happy birthday to you!” then they began to sing “happy birthday to you~~~~~~” that made me moved. i never told anyone about my birthday, how did they know? i believed they must have done a lot of things. at that moment, i found nothing to say but thanks instead!

after school, a thing coming as a surprise happened on me on my way back home. when i was riding suddenly a crowed of people rushed out to stopped my bike.i recogized them at once. they were my senior classmates. they all comlained to me,“why don't you tell us about your birthday? don't you fear that we will let you stand treat? this time you owe us.” then each of them gave a gift and a card with best wishes to me. i was deeply moved again. i suggested having a dinner together. but they all refused because of the time. then they left me saying we would ask you to pay us another day!

when i got back home, i thought of everything happened today. suddenly i felt so happy because i had such great friends around me. i thanked them from the bottom of my heart. i would value the precious friendship forever!

i have so many feelings through that special day. the only rose without thorns in the world is friendship. a true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart. truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget. one friend in a lifetime is much, two are many, three are hardly possible. stick to make friends, forlife without friends is like life on a desert island. to find one real friend in a lifetime is good fortune, to keep him is a blessing.

  thank you for your attention!

Shanghai residents breathed the most polluted air they had seen in two months on Wednesday as weak cold air from the north brought pollutants to the Yangtze River Delta.

But clean air is expected on Thursday thanks to another round of cold air, forecasters said.

Seasonal factors played an important role as winter is the high pollution season, and straw burning in nearby provinces also contributed to the pollution, experts said.

Shanghai's air quality index, a new air quality reporting system that monitors sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, PM10 and PM2.5, reached 254 by 7 pm on Wednesday.

The figure, which indicated the air had reached the level of heavy pollution, was the highest seen since the index was introduced two months ago, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

Shanghai's hourly density of PM2.5, air particles smaller than 2.5 microns, also reached 250 micrograms per cubic meter by 10 am, while the reading was only 60 micrograms per cubic meter early Tuesday morning.

The heavy pollution in the eastern metropolis followed thick air pollution in Beijing over the weekend. Beijing's density of PM2.5 broke the record since the municipality began publishing the data in early 20xx as its figure went higher than 900 micrograms per cubic meter in several districts of the city on Saturday.

Lin Chenyan, a forecaster with Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, said the cold front brought in airborne pollutants from the north.

"The cold snap is like a broom sweeping down all the way to Shanghai, and it brings the dust here," said Lin, adding that atmospheric motion sometimes causes trouble such as that.

Before arriving in Shanghai, the pollutants had left some of Shanghai's neighboring provinces shrouded in smog and fog.

Fifty out of the 72 monitoring stations in Jiangsu province reported medium to heavy pollution on Monday evening, according to Zhang Xiangzhi, deputy director of the Jiangsu Environmental Monitoring Center.

Yang Xin, a professor with Fudan University's department of environmental science and engineering who specializes in atmospheric particulates, said seasonal influences explain the record-breaking data in both Beijing and Shanghai.

"Take Shanghai as an example. It just celebrated its cleanest summer in 20xx - sea breeze from the southeast is helpful in diluting pollutants in the air. However, the monsoons coming from the northwest in the winter usually bring dirty air from the north," Yang said.

Agricultural straw burning in nearby areas also contributed to part of Shanghai's PM2.5 reading, according to Wang Lin, a researcher at Fudan University's Department of Environmental Science and Engineering.

"But it's hard for the Shanghai government to prohibit farmers in the neighboring regions from doing so," Wang said.

According to Lin, the forecaster, Shanghai's air was set to improve on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. The next wave of cold air is much cleaner because of the clearing of air pollution in the north.
