　　5月4日下午，北京3000多名學(xué)生在天安門前集會(huì)游行，他們高呼“還我青島”、“外爭(zhēng)主權(quán)，內(nèi)除國(guó)賊”等口號(hào)，呼吁各界人士行動(dòng)起來(lái)，反對(duì)帝國(guó)主義的侵略行徑，保衛(wèi)中國(guó)的領(lǐng)土和主權(quán)。這一運(yùn)動(dòng)得到的工人和各階層人士的聲援和支持，上海、南京等地的工紛紛舉行罷工或示威。在全國(guó)人民的壓力下，北洋政府被迫釋放被捕學(xué)生，罷免曹汝霖等人的職務(wù)，并指令巴黎參加會(huì)議的代表拒絕在和約上簽字。

　　五四運(yùn)動(dòng)是一次徹底的不妥協(xié)的反帝反封建的愛(ài)國(guó)運(yùn)動(dòng)。她促進(jìn)了馬克思主義與中國(guó)工人運(yùn)動(dòng)的結(jié)合，造就了一批具有初步共產(chǎn)主義思想的知識(shí)分子，為中國(guó)共產(chǎn)黨的建立做了思想上、干部上的準(zhǔn)備。

　　為了使青年繼承的發(fā)揚(yáng)五四運(yùn)動(dòng)的光榮傳統(tǒng)，1939年，陜甘寧邊區(qū)西北青年救國(guó)聯(lián)合會(huì)規(guī)定5月4日為中國(guó)青年節(jié)。1949年12月23日，中國(guó)人民政府政務(wù)院正式規(guī)定：5月4日為中國(guó)青年節(jié)。
