the value of compromise
“oh, today is a bright day, it‘s so wonderful! i am going to enjoy myself!” a clam was on the beach, the wind was as happy as a child. the sun was like fire. it felt hot. the clam laid on the beach, “i can sleep on it!” it said.
after some minutes, a crane flew across the sky. it was hungry and looking for some food. “it is a shiny day, but i can’t find any delicious food, like clam, oh, i really want to… hey, wait a minute! a clam!” it cried. it saw a clam basking in the sun on the beach. “today, i am so lucky, i am seeing a clam, and it looks so delicious!” it quickly flew down to catch the clam. when the crane poked its long bill into the clam, suddenly, the clam closed tight on the crane’s bill. “oops!” they both said. “hey, what are you doing? if today or tomorrow it doesn’t rain, you will die!” the crane cried. “also, if today or tomorrow i do not budge, you will die, right?” they both didn’t give up. there they both stayed-stuck! soon, the fisherman came. he smiled:” what a bright day! i will bring the clam and the crane home. they will be my supper!” then the fisherman picked them both and went away.
the moral of the story is that if arguments go on for too long, with neither side giving in, then both parties will lose and a third party will gain the advantage.
