一：《木馬贏家》內容簡介
選篇故事中的男孩保羅渴望母愛，但是母親卻不能感覺到愛，因為對金錢的追求已經窒息了她的母愛的天性，使她喪失了愛的能力。保羅從母親眼中看不到愛，卻能在家中聽見一個聲音不斷輕聲低語：“一定要有更多的錢!一定要有更多的錢!”為了討母親歡心，也為了讓家里那個令人無法忍受的聲音停止下來，保羅騎上木馬，讓木馬帶他到一個“幸運的”地方去，因為母親告訴他好運可以帶來金錢。他發(fā)現(xiàn)自己在騎木馬騎到瘋狂的狀態(tài)時，就能夠預知將會贏得下一場比賽的賽馬的名字。他贏了很多錢，但是家里的那個聲音不僅沒有消失，反而越來越大，說明人對金錢的渴望是沒有止盡的。保羅對賽馬結果的預見不再那么靈驗，在做了最后一次預測之后，他從木馬上摔了下來，不久死去。男孩保羅通過賭馬賺錢，男孩的母親、叔叔以及其他為金錢而瘋狂的人其實也是在賭博，為贏得金錢而犧牲了人的價值。 在《木馬贏家》中，對金錢的追求扭曲了人世間最珍貴的母子親情，母親無法去愛兒子，而兒子為了得到母愛，竟只能用錢去買。母親因而不再是愛的源泉，而成了造成兒子悲劇的根源。從這一點來看，這篇故事也反映了母親對兒子的負面影響，與《兒子與情人》似有相通之處。

But though he had good prospects, these prospects never materialized. There was always the grinding sense of the shortage of money, though the style was always kept up.
