縮寫詞又稱首字母縮略詞，將幾個詞的首字母加在一起合成一字，全部用大寫字母拼成，從而代替一組冗長復雜的詞或詞組。這樣，既可節(jié)省版面標題詞數(shù)，又能更好地提示新聞內容，使人讀來頗感簡潔易記，還可使版面編排減少沉悶之感。例如：

　　cppcc head meets returned overseas students in beijing. (cppcc=the chinese people's political consultative conference中國人民政治協(xié)商會議)

　　全國政協(xié)主席在京接見歸國留學生。

　　aids victims surging in us. (aids=acquired immune deficiency syndrome：后天免疫缺損綜合癥，即“艾滋病”)

　　美“艾滋病”患者激增。

　　plo says big israeli drive ahead. (plo=palestine liberation organization：巴勒斯坦解放組織)

　　巴解組織稱以色列即將大舉進攻。

　　從以上數(shù)則實例中不難發(fā)現(xiàn)，英語新聞標題中經(jīng)常出現(xiàn)的縮寫詞主要分為三類：

　　1、組織機構等專有名稱，如上述例句中的cppcc (全國政協(xié))和plo(巴解組織)。又如：

　　unesco=united nations educational, scientific and cultural organization(聯(lián)合國教科文組織)
　　imf=international monetary fund(國際貨幣基金組織)
　　asean=association of southeast asian nations(東南亞國家聯(lián)盟；“東盟”)
　　gatt=general agreement on tariffs and trade(關貿(mào)總協(xié)定)
　　wto=world trade organization(世界貿(mào)易組織)
　　ope=organization of petroleum exporting countries(石油輸出國組織；“歐佩克”)
　　plo=palestine liberation organization(巴勒斯坦解放組織；“巴解”)
　　ioc=international olympic committee(國際奧林匹克委員會)
　　nasa=national aeronautics and space administration[(美國)國家宇航局]
　　who=world health organization(世界衛(wèi)生組織)
　　oau=organization of african unity(非洲統(tǒng)一組織)

　　2、常見事物的名稱，如上述例句中的aids (艾滋病)。又如：

　　ufo=unidentified flying object(不明飛行物；“飛碟”)
　　dji=dow-jones index(道·瓊斯指數(shù))
　　pc=personal computer(個人電腦)
　　abm=anti-ballistic missile(反彈道導彈)
　　pt=public relations(公共關系)
　　salt=strategic arms limitation talks(限制戰(zhàn)略武器會談)
　　sdi=strategic defence initiative(戰(zhàn)略防御措施)
　　gmt=greenwich mean time(格林威治標準時間)

　　3、表示人們的職業(yè)、職務或職稱的名詞，如 mp(議員)。又如：

　　pm=prime minister(總理；首相)
　　gm=general manager(總經(jīng)理)
　　vip=very important person(貴賓；要人)
　　tp=traffic policeman(交通警察)
　　pa=personal assistant(私人助理)
