　　On 5 October 1966, the world's teachers made a giant step forward. A Special Intergovernmental Conference adopted the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This Recommendation, for the first time ever, gave teachers, throughout the world, an instrument that defines their responsibilities and asserts their rights.

　　UNESCO inaugurated World Teacher's Day on 5th October 1994. This day was selected to commemorate the adoption of UNESCO/ILO joint Recommendation. World Teacher's Day also highlights the Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel. World Teacher's Day is celebrated in almost 100 countries. It lays emphasis on the achievements and contributions of the teachers around the world.

　　Education International strongly believes that World Teacher's Day should be internationally recognized and celebrated around the world. It also believes that, on this date, the principles of the 1966 and 1997 Recommendations should be considered for implementation in all nations. The efforts of Education International and its 348 member organizations have led to the wide spread recognition of World Teacher's Day. Every year, Education International launches a public awareness campaign to highlight the contributions of the teaching profession.

　　Our Chinese history has been the establishment of Teacher's Day. In 1931, educators Tai Shuang-qiu and Cheng Bao called on an establishment of teachers' day to improve teachers' treatment, protection and promotion of teachers training. They gave out Teachers' Declaration and asked for the official agreement of teachers' Day and they celebrated by themselves for teachers in the Central University in Nanjing. Soon, the KMT government first agreed on June 6 for the teachers, then teachers' day changed to August 27 (birthday of Confucius).

　　After 1949, the Central People's government resumed June 6 for teachers, the Ministry of Education gave a circular that local education workers, according to the actual situation to organize their celebration activities. In 1951 National Education trade union s, educators are recognized as part of the working class. On April 19, 1951, Minister of Education and the Chinese Education union Chairman of the National Committee issued a written statement that May 1 International Labor Day was at the same time celebrated as teachers' day. But this day lacks teachers' profession and the results were not ideal. Especially after 1957, under the influence of the "extreme left", teachers were ignored, so teachers' day has actually ceased to exist.

　　In recent years, the Chinese government has taken many measures to mobilize the whole society to respect teachers, improve the status of teachers and improve teachers work and living conditions. In human and social development and progress, teachers play a huge role. Teachers are engineers of human civilization. The continuity of the development of human civilization depends on generation after generation of good education. 　　教師被人們稱為“園丁”、“人類靈魂的工程師”，是受到全社會尊重的一種職業(yè)。早在1931年5月，教育家邰爽秋、程其保等人就曾建議設(shè)立教師節(jié)，發(fā)表了《教師節(jié)宣言》，呈請當(dāng)時的中央政府批準(zhǔn)，并于1931年6月6日在南京中央大學(xué)舉行了第一次慶賀教師節(jié)的儀式。但當(dāng)時的教育部沒有批準(zhǔn)把這個節(jié)日列入學(xué)校校歷。盡管這樣，后來許多學(xué)校的教師仍于6月6日自動舉行紀(jì)念活動。

　　1939年，當(dāng)時的教育部規(guī)定以每年的8月27日孔子誕辰紀(jì)念日為教師節(jié)，并頒布了《教師節(jié)紀(jì)念暫行辦法》，但后來未實行。

　　新中國成立后，1951年經(jīng)教育部和全國教育工會商定，廢除了6月6日的教師節(jié)，而將教師節(jié)改在同“五一”國際勞動節(jié)一起紀(jì)念因無教師特點，實行效果很不理想，后來教師節(jié)便銷聲言跡了。

　　1985年1月21日，第六屆全國人大常委會第九次會議決定，每年9月10日為教師節(jié)。

　　定教師節(jié)為9月10日，是考慮到新學(xué)年開始，學(xué)校要有新的氣象，師生要有新的感覺。新生入學(xué)伊飽即開始尊師重教活動，可以給教師教好、學(xué)生學(xué)好創(chuàng)造良好的氣氛。同時，9月份全國性節(jié)日少，便于各方面集中時間組織活動和突出宣傳報道、促進(jìn)全國范圍內(nèi)形成尊師重教、尊重知識、尊重人才的良好社會風(fēng)尚。
