A Boom in Adult Education 成人教育的繁榮

　　Every Tuesday and Friday evening sees Miss Li， my neighbor and a secretary in a company rush home after a hard day's work， gulp down her meals and then hurry out to catch the bus for her English class. Miss Li's case is not unique， and now more and more city adults spend their leisure time trying to improve themselves at school or college.

　　There are a number of reasons for people to go back for their education. Some people， like Miss Li， are doing it to acquire another degree or diploma to impress the society. To them more knowledge， or rather， more credentials means more opportunities for better jobs and quicker promotion.

　　Other people， especially those who are laid off or out of employment go to vocational school to prepare to return to the job market. They are eager for new skills so that they can be qualified for the jobs in retail trade， administration， education and other service categories to which they are strange because most of them were blue-collar workers in the factory.

　　There are also people who come to take such courses as Chinese traditional medicine， painting， calligraphy and photography. As their working weeks decline people begin to have time to fulfill their old dream of their heart's desire.

　　Out of necessity or out of interest， people go back to school for the common goal——to improve themselves， and this boom in adult education， in turn， helps to raise the intellectual standard of the whole country.

　　也有人前來參加中國傳統(tǒng)醫(yī)學(xué)、繪畫、書法、攝影等課程。當(dāng)他們工作周的時(shí)候，人們開始有時(shí)間來滿足他們對他們內(nèi)心的渴望的夢想。

　　出于必要或是出于興趣，人走回學(xué)校共同的目標(biāo)——提高自己，這繁榮在成人教育，反過來，有助于提高整個(gè)國家的知識水平。

　　Good afternoon，everyone.

　　Welcome to our school! The topic I’m going to talk about is the choice between arts and science. As is known to all, students in China can’t study both arts and science. Therefore, a choice between them is bound to be made.

　　At the end of my first year in high school, I decided to study science rather than arts. And the reasons are as follows: The most important one is that I love science, which can show me the mysteries of nature and the universe. What’s more, I’m good at it. 　　Today is Saturday. Two of my classmates and I go to the bookshop. It's the biggest one in my city. There are plenty of books. We go to the cartoon-book zone. And then we stay there for a long time. We find our favorite books and read them there. It's very quiet in the bookshop. I like it very much. Reading at bookshop or libriary is very enjoyable. Finally, we buy some books we like and then we go home together.

　　I think reading is important in the whole life for people. There are many benefits of reading. Firstly, reading increases our knowledge and we can learn the world affairs without going out. Secondly, reading is a good way to improve reading and writing skills. Before you learn to write, you must know how others write. Thirdly, reading can broaden our knowledge and horizon, which is important to job hunting in the future. Finally, reading helps us become self-cultivation that would be beneficial to our whole life. Therefore, start to reading, no matter how old you are and what you are doing. Then, you may find the great charm and benefits of reading.

　　The Importance of Confidence

　　Whatever one does, one should do it with confidence. If one has no confidence, there is little possibility that one can achieve anything when faced with hardships. This truth seems to be self-evident. In reality, however, we do see a lot of people who always complain that they lack the ability to do something or that their difficulties are too great to overcome. For some, this might be true. But for many others, this only shows that they have lost heart.

　　Why do some people often feel frustrated even though they are capable of doing something? I think there are two main reasons. In the first place, these people don't have a correct estimate of themselves. For example, ...... Secondly, there is another possibility that they exaggerate the difficulties. They can't see ..... 　　In my opinion, one should build up faith in oneself as long as he has a right attitude towards his own abilities. We should neither underestimate nor overestimate our abilities.
