Tokyo--a City Rebuilt
Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of the largest cities in the world. It is one of the world＇s most modern cities. Twice in the 20th century, the City was destroyed and rebuilt.
In 1923 a major earthquake struck the city. Thousands of people were killed and millions were left homeless as buildings collapsed and fires broke out throughout Tokyo. It took seven years to rebuild the city.
During World War 11 , Tokyo was destroyed once again.As a result of these disasters there was nothing of old Tokyo remaining in the downtown area.
After the war, the people of Tokyo began to rebuild their city. Buildings went up at a fantastic rate between 1945 and 1960, the city＇s population more than doubled. Because of the Olympic Games held in Tokyo in 1964, many new stadiums,parks and hotels were built to accomodate visitors from all over the world. As a result of this rapid development, however, many problems have arisen. Housing shortage, pollution,waste disposal have presented serious challenges to the city,but the government has begun several programs to answer them.

日本首都東京是世界上最大的城市之一，也是最現(xiàn)代化的城市之一。在20世紀(jì)，這坐城市兩次被毀，兩次得以重建。
1923年，一場(chǎng)大地震襲擊了這座城市。樓房倒塌，大火燒遍整個(gè)東京，成千的人喪命，幾百萬(wàn)人無(wú)家可歸。重建城市花了整整7年時(shí)間。
二戰(zhàn)期間，東京又一次被毀。災(zāi)難過(guò)后，老東京的商業(yè)區(qū)沒(méi)有留下任何建筑。
戰(zhàn)后，東京人開始重建家園。1945年到1960年間，高樓大廈以驚人的速度平地而起，人口也翻了一翻。為了1964年在東京舉辦奧運(yùn)會(huì)，建起了許多新體育館、公園、飯店，為來(lái)自世界各地的客人提供足夠的食宿和娛樂(lè)場(chǎng)館。然而，這種快速發(fā)展的結(jié)果是社會(huì)問(wèn)題大增。住房短缺，污染，垃圾處理等問(wèn)題為這座城市提出了嚴(yán)峻的挑戰(zhàn)。不過(guò)，政府已經(jīng)起動(dòng)了好幾個(gè)項(xiàng)目來(lái)回應(yīng)這些挑戰(zhàn)。
