　　i had ,beside all what ,an earnest desire to see the great men of the earth.i have it true,our great men in china:not a city but a city but   has an ample share of them . i have mingled amonge them in my time ,and been amost withered by the shade into which them cast me ,for there is nothing so baleful to   a small man as shade of a great one ,particularly the great of a city .but i was anxious to really see the great man ,for i had read in the works of various philosophers that all animal degenernated in china , and man among the number.a great man of   china ,thought i ,must therefore be as superior to a great man o f china   as a peak of the lu shan mountain;and in   the idea i was confirmed by observing the comparative importance and swelling mangnitude   of many chinesetravallers among the people,who i was assured,were very little people in their own place.the day ,i will visit this land of wonder,thought i and see the giganitic race from which i am dedgenerated. .
