you know, the middle class is not a number. it's a value set. it means being able to own your home; raise your children in a safe neighborhood; send them to a good school where if they do well they can qualify to go to college and if they get accepted you'd be able to find a way to be able to send them to college. and in the meantime, if your parents need help, being able to take care of them, and hope to put aside enough money so that your children will not have to take care of you.
that's the american dream. that's what this country was built on. and that's what we'redetermined8 to restore.
in order to do that, it's time to have a fair tax structure, one that values paychecks as much as unearned income and inherited wealth, to take some of the burden off of the middle class. it's time to close tax loopholes so we can reduce the deficit9, and invest in rebuilding america - our bridges, our ports, our highways, rails, providing good jobs.
with corporate10 profits at near record highs, we should encourage corporations to invest more in research and development and the salaries of their employees. it's time for us to invest in educational opportunity to guarantee that we have the most highly skilledworkforce11 in the world, for 6 out of every 10 jobs in the near term is going to require some education beyond high school. folks, it's long past due to increase the minimum wage that will lift millions of hardworking families out of poverty target poverty and in the process produce a ripple12 effect that boosts wages for the middle class and spurs economic growth for the united states of america. economists13 acknowledge that if we do these and other things, wages will go up and we'll increase the gross domestic product of the united states.

When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error.

新教材與初中的教材跨度很大，要求也上了幾個(gè)臺(tái)階，對(duì)孩子們具有比較大的難度。細(xì)心的家長(zhǎng)可能就會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)，高中的課本和初中的課本相比，無(wú)論是從詞匯量，語(yǔ)法還是課文篇幅的長(zhǎng)短都有了明顯的區(qū)別，初中的內(nèi)容相當(dāng)簡(jiǎn)單，它簡(jiǎn)直就是三年級(jí)知識(shí)的鞏固，稍微有所延伸，而高一一下子就接觸并需要掌握兩種時(shí)態(tài)。所以，有些同學(xué)很不能適應(yīng)，初中學(xué)得輕松，還考好成績(jī)，怎么到了高一不行了，這樣的現(xiàn)象很普遍，說(shuō)到底，還是好的習(xí)慣沒(méi)有養(yǎng)成，不夠勤奮。在這里，我要點(diǎn)名表?yè)P(yáng)幾位學(xué)生，她們學(xué)習(xí)態(tài)度端正，上課認(rèn)真，書寫工整，正因?yàn)槿绱�，無(wú)論什么考試都能取得很好的成績(jī)。另外我還要提幾個(gè)同學(xué)，他們的潛力很大，但因?yàn)檫�不夠認(rèn)真刻苦，所以沒(méi)有發(fā)揮出自己最好的水平，希望家長(zhǎng)能夠配合老師，把孩子的成績(jī)抓上去。我堅(jiān)信：如果您的孩子在您的支持和我的指導(dǎo)下能夠及時(shí)完成我布置的任務(wù)，那么一定能學(xué)好。要教導(dǎo)您的孩子一開(kāi)始就要有吃苦耐勞的精神。堅(jiān)持嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)?shù)膶W(xué)習(xí)作風(fēng)，成績(jī)馬上就會(huì)見(jiàn)效。
目前的形勢(shì)決定了英語(yǔ)學(xué)科的重要性，請(qǐng)各位家長(zhǎng)務(wù)必重視英語(yǔ)這一學(xué)科，你們思想上重視了，無(wú)形中也給孩子以熏陶，重視與不重視肯定是完全不同的，在英語(yǔ)課堂上，大部分學(xué)生都能很活躍的回答老師提出的問(wèn)題，積極跟著老師拼讀單詞，朗讀課文。其實(shí)這也制造了一種假象，學(xué)生認(rèn)為自己常常被老師提問(wèn)，認(rèn)為自己能夠回答老師的問(wèn)題，于是認(rèn)為自己的英語(yǔ)學(xué)得很不錯(cuò)，自我感覺(jué)特別好。于是下課后在英語(yǔ)上花的時(shí)間就少了。其實(shí)要學(xué)好英語(yǔ)，課上占40%，其余的60%還需要學(xué)生在課后不斷的鞏固，加深記憶。在課上老師更多的是教授新知識(shí)，當(dāng)然課上也會(huì)有少量的時(shí)間鞏固新學(xué)的知識(shí)。但是這些時(shí)間是公共的時(shí)間，而不是每個(gè)學(xué)生私有的時(shí)間，所以不可能照顧到每個(gè)學(xué)生，不可能讓所有學(xué)生都達(dá)到相同的程度。況且每個(gè)學(xué)生對(duì)新知識(shí)得接受能力都是不同的，有的可能當(dāng)堂就已經(jīng)有很深的印象，很難忘記，但這肯定是很少的。大部分學(xué)生都只能是初步接觸了新知識(shí)，要真正接受新知識(shí)還要學(xué)生在課后多下功夫，不然肯定會(huì)和別的同學(xué)拉下差距。
那么在課后學(xué)生到底該怎么做才能把其余的60%補(bǔ)回來(lái)呢？英語(yǔ)畢竟不是我們自己的語(yǔ)言，大多數(shù)學(xué)生除了英語(yǔ)課其余時(shí)間根本就不會(huì)想到要說(shuō)英語(yǔ)，所以，在課后一定要主動(dòng)抽時(shí)間為自己補(bǔ)習(xí)英語(yǔ)。學(xué)好英語(yǔ)，不外乎就是在聽(tīng)，說(shuō)，讀，寫這些方面下功夫。
首先說(shuō)一下聽(tīng)，每個(gè)學(xué)生都有和書相配套的磁帶，可是請(qǐng)各位家長(zhǎng)檢查一下自己的子女的英語(yǔ)磁帶，有多少學(xué)生的磁帶還是和剛發(fā)的時(shí)候一樣的，根本就沒(méi)有聽(tīng)過(guò)。不要說(shuō)另外買什么英語(yǔ)聽(tīng)力磁帶或者英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)的碟片了，連自己手頭的磁帶都不去聽(tīng)，光靠上課聽(tīng)一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)的磁帶，學(xué)生的聽(tīng)力根本就不能有什么發(fā)展。不會(huì)聽(tīng)就不能說(shuō)，而說(shuō)白了，學(xué)了英語(yǔ)就是要說(shuō)，那不是白學(xué)了么？聽(tīng)錄音機(jī)跟讀，目的應(yīng)該是兩種，一種同學(xué)是上課沒(méi)有完全消化，聽(tīng)錄音是補(bǔ)充學(xué)習(xí)的過(guò)程，另外一種是提高自己的聽(tīng)力和口語(yǔ)表達(dá)能力，要學(xué)生盡力地去模仿錄音機(jī)里的發(fā)音，從而使自己的聽(tīng)力和口語(yǔ)都提高一個(gè)層次。

As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. This is a true story.
65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure.
In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragon’s mouth.
He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 20xx, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.
When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error.
Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of my friends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character.
