英語是世界上主要的國(guó)際語言。它是英國(guó)、美國(guó)、加拿大、澳大利亞、新西蘭和一些其它國(guó)家諸如烏干達(dá)和博茨瓦納等主要使用的語言。差不多有三億二千萬的人口把英語作為第一語言，這相當(dāng)于說西班牙語的人的總數(shù)，但比起漢語和印度語來還是少些。
全世界說英語的人口總數(shù)估計(jì)將達(dá)到四億六千萬，僅次于中文普通話。英語是印度、南非和許多其它亞非國(guó)家地區(qū)的第二語言。但英語更多地是一門用于國(guó)際商務(wù)、外交和旅游的語言。全世界五分之一的人口具備不同程度的英語能力。
大多數(shù)的國(guó)際商務(wù)貿(mào)易、大量的國(guó)際交流活動(dòng)都有使用英語。美國(guó)跨國(guó)公司的重要性使得英語成了國(guó)際商務(wù)語言，好萊塢和音樂產(chǎn)業(yè)也使得英語成了媒體和娛樂業(yè)的重要語言。
