I used to watch her from my kitchen window, she seemed so small as she muscled her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they play edduring recess. A sea of children, and yet to me, she stood out from them all. I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could. I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing would practice dribbling and shooting over and over again, sometimes until dark. One day I asked her why she practiced so much. She looked directly in my eyes and without a moment of hesitation she said, “I want to go to college. The only way I can go is if I get a scholarship. I like basketball. I decided that if I were good enough, I would get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball.I want to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the factsdon't count.”
Then she smiled and ran towards the court to recap the routine I had seen over and over again. Well, I had to give it to her—she was determined.I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. Every week,she led her varsity team to victory. One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head cradled in her arms. I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. “Oh,nothing,” came a soft reply. “I am just too short.” The coach told her that at 5’5” she would probably never get to play for a top ranked team— much less offered a scholarship—so she should stop dreaming about college. She was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment. I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet. She lifted her head from her hands and told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the power of adream. He told her that if she really wanted to play for a good college, if she truly wanted a scholarship, that nothing could stop her except one thing —
her own attitude. He told her again, “If the dream is big enough, the factsdon't count.”
The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern CaliforniaChampionship game, she was seen by a college recruiter. She was indeed offered a scholarship, a full ride, to a Division 1, NCwomen's basketball team. She was going to get the college education that she had dreamed of and worked toward for all those years. It's true: If the dream is big enough, the facts don't count.

i am, however, grateful that this day is different in one important respect from another important occasion 79 years ago.
in june of 1919, the first president of yenching university, john leighton stuart, was set to deliver the very first commencement address on these very grounds.
at the appointed hour, he appeared, but no students appeared.
they were all out leading the may 4th movement for chinas political and cultural renewal.
when i read this, i hoped that when i walked into the auditorium today, someone would be sitting here.

It is such an honor and pleasure for me to be back at Yale, especially onthe occasion of the 300th anniversary. I have had so many memories of my timehere, and as Nick was speaking I thought about how I ended up at Yale LawSchool. And it tells a little bit about how much progress we’ve made.
What I think most about when I think of Yale is not just the politicallycharged atmosphere and not even just the superb legal education that I received.It was at Yale that I began work that has been at the core of what I have caredabout ever since. I began working with New Haven legal services representingchildren. And I studied child development, abuse and neglect at the Yale NewHaven Hospital and the Child Study Center. I was lucky enough to receive a civilrights internship with Marian Wright Edelman at the Children’s Defense Fund,where I went to work after I graduated. Those experiences fueled in me a passionto work for the benefit of children, particularly the most vulnerable.
When I was thinking about running for the United States Senate-which wassuch an enormous decision to make, one I never could have dreamed that I wouldhave been making when I was here on campus-I visited a school in New York Cityand I met a young woman, who was a star athlete.
I was there because of Billy Jean King promoting an HBO special about womenin sports called “Dare to compete.” It was about Title IX and how we finally,thanks to government action, provided opportunities to girls and women insports.
So, dare to compete, yes, but maybe even more difficult, dare to care. Dareto care about people who need our help to succeed and fulfill their own lives.There are so many out there and sometimes all it takes is the simplest ofgestures or helping hands and many of you understand that already. It is not the vast conspiracy you may have heard about; rather it’s asilent conspiracy of cynicism and indifference and alienation that we see everyday, in our popular culture and in our prodigious consumerism.

其實(shí)我沒有高大身材，也沒健壯肌肉，天生不屬于運(yùn)動型的人。幾年來能夠堅(jiān)持下來，因?yàn)槲业谋澈笥幸粋�(gè)團(tuán)隊(duì)，有著強(qiáng)大團(tuán)隊(duì)的力量，在這里，非常感謝我們的晨跑隊(duì)，長期以來，我們相互鼓勵著，一起流汗，共同享受著健康帶來的快樂。比如這次幾位跑友為了維持秩序，未能參加萬米跑，而他們卻時(shí)刻關(guān)心著兄弟們狀況，及時(shí)通報(bào)名次和時(shí)間，給我們帶來了信心和勇氣。同時(shí)，也來于自己內(nèi)心的渴望和執(zhí)著的追求，為了一個(gè)健康的體魄，曾為自己的晨跑寫過許多日志，以此來為自己加油、鼓勁。
俗話說：“騏驥一躍，不能十步，駑馬十駕，功在不舍”。真的，人非常需要這種楔而不舍的精神。在堅(jiān)持晨跑這件上，確實(shí)是需要非常毅力的。每天要堅(jiān)持早睡早起，要按照固定的作息時(shí)間，悠閑散漫的日子一去不返，特別是晚上不能休息太遲，改變了生活方式，這在年輕人看來，簡直是不可思議的事，因?yàn)樵缟衔妩c(diǎn)鐘，天微微亮，正是做夢的好時(shí)光。曾經(jīng)有朋友笑話說，你們都過上了老年生活。實(shí)際上，我們已經(jīng)不能再做夢了，只有樹立目標(biāo)，下定決心，勇往直前地朝著一個(gè)方向前進(jìn)，理想終將實(shí)現(xiàn)。曾經(jīng)單位女同事評我為“最有毅力男人”，我想她們給了過高的評價(jià)，或許她們看到我比較執(zhí)著的一面吧。
